Joost and his Motor Neuron Disease

This morning I got the fright of my life when I listened to Radio 702 (yes I can be all serious and stuff too haha) and John Robbie was interviewing Joost van der Westhuizen on his disease and his speech was noticeably very slurred. Apparently the former bok is set to go under South Africa’s first stem cell therapy to treat him.

So what is Motor Neuron Disease? According to Wikipedia, “The motor neurone diseases (or motor neuron diseases) (MND) are a group of neurological disorders that selectively affect motor neurones, the cells that control voluntary muscle activity including speaking, walking, breathing, swallowing and general movement of the body.” You may or may not know that famous genius Stephen Hawkings suffers from it.

Joost, who’s been criticized by the media of late for his immature behaviour involving drugs and cheating on his ex-wife Amor Vittone, says he doesn’t care what people think of him anymore and just wants to get better. His right-hand side and speech have been most affected by this disease.

Wishing you all the best Joost!
