female pouters – this one is for you… men pay attention and don’t be as sarcastic as my hubby!

when i was still in highschool, i had the most terrible period pains. i used to tell all my guy friends at the time it was because “it is the ripping and tearing of the uterine lining away from the uterus!” and as you can imagine, that would make them cringe and make them want to be priests for the next 5 minutes.

my husband on the other hand, when i do get bad pains (they are not as frequent as they used to be!) always loves to tell me its payback for me being a woman and having the ability to have multiple orgasms! jokes aside, are we doomed to suffer in pain because eve screwed up in the garden of eden all those years back?

well, maybe we need to understand why we get these terrible pains and cramps first. not everyone experiences them, but lots of women do! cramps are caused by prostaglandins, chemicals a womens body produces to make the muscles of the uterus contract. the contracting muscles help the blood be passed through the vagina during a period.

generally speaking the more regular your period, the more cramps/pains you will having leading up to and during that period.

the pains and cramps can be mildly annoying to extremely painful. i know many of my friends can actually pass out due to the pain. it may seem weird but cramping can be genetic – if your momma and grand momma had bad period cramps – chances are you will too. fear not – as you get older the cramps generally get slightly better – like myself, although i have the odd period which i curse to hell and back.

in the mean time, you want to stay comfortable! some cramps are noticable but dont really get in the way of your life others are not so. take a pain tablet like nurofen – available over the counter at all pharmacies. but don’t let the cramps sneak up on you – its advised to start taking some pain killers slightly in advance to getting your cramps, which you should know from your general cycle…

exercise will also help relieve bad cramps, or prevent them from getting worse. why? becaus exercise released endorphis, chemicals in the body which will make you feel good! or using a hot water bottle on the area with the cramps, or a hot bath should help relieve those pains/cramps.

the difference between menstrual cramps that are more painful and those that are less painful is apparently related to a woman’s prostaglandin levels. women with menstrual cramps have prostaglandin blood levels that are 5-13 times higher than women who do not experience cramps. menstrual cramps are very similar to those a pregnant woman experiences when she is given prostaglandin as a medication to induce labor.

are you feeling really turned on during your time of the month? ladies, don’t be ashamed… your hormones are on a rollercoaster bigger than the cobra at ratanga junction!!! some women during this time find that they can’t focus because all they can think about is a sexual act. its not advisable to actually have full on intercourse during this time as you are most prone to infection and may make somewhere look like a crime scene however, if you can’t focus, maybe just help yourself out in the shower or bath with clitoral stimulation, if you are not into helping yourself, ask your partner, im sure they wouldn’t oblige.
