Tangled Tree – Wines With a Green Heart

birdsThere are fewer things that make me happier than seeing brands, big or small embracing the environment and acknowledging that it is important and even though going “green” is already incredibly popular overseas and more the norm than the exception to the rule, sadly it is not seen often enough in South Africa but Tangled Tree is changing that in the face of wine industry for South Africa. Their philosophy makes mention that they will not change the world by being caring towards the environment but changing the world and the face of the industry is not something that will simply happen over night, just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, companies embracing the change to address a happier world for the planet will too take time. Baby steps will get us there eventually.

How does Tangled Tree make a difference to promote a happier and healthier world for all? Well, for starters their bottles are not  glass like most wine bottles, Tangled Tree uses plastic containers using 100% recyclable materials which reduces the amount of waste and energy used in creating them. They are also assisting in promoting the bird life and wildlife in the Robertson region.

Living in Cape Town, everyone is  self-proclaimed connoisseur of fine wine, I’ll be the first one to admit I am no expert but I just enjoy the occasional glass of wine when I am not on my detox or follow up healthier eating plan but every now and then the occasion calls for a glass of something and what better than a glass of wine which was not only made with love, care and expertise but what about a glass of wine that was made with love for nature and our planet, Earth.

The wine I have waiting for me for a special day was a gift from the first #BWB meeting from Tangled Tree which I am so looking forward to having with a friend one day soon.

It’s also refreshing to have such a quirky and interactive brand on Twitter @TangledTree and Facebook, be sure to check out their website here for more information on their entire wine offering!!

Disclaimer: This item was a gift, this has not altered my view of the product in anyway I am just so excited to try it 🙂

20120920-144418.jpg

Being a fitness fanatic, I am completely in love with FITNESS MAGAZINE !

Never have I come across a magazine so informative and interesting, I have been buying and reading this magazine religiously for over 2 years now, never once have I been disappointed in it.

Being from South Africa, a lot of our fitness magazines were imported from overseas, which I didn’t bother buying due to the fact that if there were recipes or anything in them, I wouldn’t find half the ingredients or clothing and supplements they had for sale or advertised in the magazine.

Having fallen in love with FITNESS MAGAZINE SOUTH AFRICA I would highly recommended this magazine to any fitness fanatic, or those starting off new in the gym or fitness and health lifestyle.

20120920-145821.jpg

Fitness magazine is very comprehensive, they have articles for beginners and advanced fitness freaks (like me), they have articles for the pregnant fairy’s, articles on health and training, success stories, and fat loss articles.

Ladies take advantage! Best magazine to buy, so educational and articles are always a pleasure to read. Awesome fitness clothes advertised along with nutritional supplements from leading brands.

Fitness magazine is available in your leading stores, like CNA and Dis-Chem or even better get a subscription and have it delivered to you, even better get a Digital Copy.

Fitness Magazine is well priced and well worth it! SO what you waiting for ladies, go grab one and get fit!

What’s Making You Fat?

THE SKINNY ON DIETING!

Heya Poutlings.

Well…. i have been absent on Pout Perfection for too long, now that assignments are over and handed in I can get back to what I love and that’s motivating people in the right way to be healthy!

Being a woman is tougher than ever! Celebrity diets have populated the magazines and are even gaining favour on television shows. Low calorie diets rave how “normal people” like you and me can look just like celebrities.

BUT !!!

Do you really want to be starved of nutrients, while your hormones are completely unbalanced, causing feelings of helplessness and depression?

EVERYTHING IN MODERATION!

Ever heard of that? Although there is some weak truth to that, eating everything in moderation will keep you overweight. Woman all over the world are suffering from eating disorders and some are clearly unaware of having one. If you are skipping meals or eating very little in order to lose weight…. STOP!!!! These actions will only make you pack on the pounds, sometimes at a rapid rate.

FACT!!!

Eating less than your body requires will slow down your metabolism, making weight loss impossible and will negatively affect your health.

– As you have heard, breakfast is the most important meal of the day; yet many people still confess to eating only a piece of fruit for breakfast.

THE SCIENCE!!!

– Food is used for energy, cell structure, regulating hormones and chemical reactions.

– Food takes one of three directions upon ingestion: use energy, storage, execution.

– The body receives energy from carbohydrates and fats in short supply, our body will turn to muscle for breakdown of amino acids (stored proteins) for energy, causing muscle atrophy.

LOW CALORIES = MUSCLE WASTING

– Low carbohydrate diets deplete the liver and muscle of energy, which causes muscle wasting, lack of energy and will compromise your health.

– Low calorie diets, while reducing body weight (usually for a short period of time), will ultimately poorly affect your health and in most cases will have a rebound effect.

– Low calories will reduce muscle mass and strength.

– When nutrient intake is low, the metabolic rate will become low for three reasons: decreased thyroid function, reduced thermic effect of eating and reduction in muscle mass.

– While reduction in muscle mass causes a lack of endurance (especially during exercise), in turn it will also lead to osteoporosis and lack of independence as you age.

THE WORST PART: FAT STORAGE

– Fat storage is the largest form of storage in the body.

– Low calorie diets and long waits between meals, signal the body that starvation is occurring. With this signaling, the body will turn on the storage mode.

– Eating every two to four hours has been researched to show a positive effect on body composition and overall health.

– Frequent eating boosts metabolism, regulates blood sugars and maintains muscle mass.

– Your body doesn’t understand what to do with processed foods. Diets high in sugar and sodium as well as processed food, do not seem to signal satiety and therefore lead to hunger.

THE SKINNY!!!

– Eating too little is weight loss SUICIDE!!!!

So ladies, think logically about eating plans and be realistic!

Get “skinny” in a healthy lifestyle way, not a quick fix way!

New Years Eve Bash – Remedies!

So girls, are you planning on partying the night away this New Years Eve?

I can picture it now; you’re at the bash of the century sipping the night away on your Cosmo’s and downing those tequila shots, dancing your ass off and having a ball…. next thing you know, you’re waking up in bed with your mascara all over your face and the headache from hell!

This is where lil’ MarindaLiza steps in to the rescue… *cue superhero music*

***How to avoid New Years Hangovers***

  • Have a big supper

This should be common sense to the usual partying pouter, but alas, not many people know this. Eat something filling and don’t drink on an empty stomache as the alcohol will go straight to your head and you won’t even make it till midnight (especially if you’re not one who drinks on a regular basis).

  • Have a little condenced milk beforehand

An awesome trick I’ve learnt is that if you line your stomach with a spoon of condenced milk (I’ve heard fish oil also helps for this) you have much less of a chance of waking up with that monster hangover.

Forgot to do that?

Hangover Cures!

  • A super greasy breakfast

Here in South Africa, there’s one thing we know for sure – there’s nothing like a Wimpy Breakfast to take away the hangover! So why does it work? Because the immense amount of calories and food involved with the meal serve as a sponge to the alcohol in your stomach.

  • A super healthy breakfast also works…

It’s actually the better option (obviously!), so try and drink a large glass of water, which will help move the alcohol out of your system, and team it with loads of fruit and veggies.

  • Vitamins!

Just like the money you spend on the booze, vitamins B and C are your body’s currency and oh my will you feel poor in the morning without them. B vitamins are quickly used up as the body processes alcohol in the body so some people swear by toast plus yeast extract (rich in B-group vitamins), while others prefer a high-dose B vitamin supplement such as Berocca. Take 1g of antioxidant vitamin C three times a day to swipe at all those free radicals you produce as your liver breaks down alcohol.

  • Coffee!

Yes my dear coffee lovers! To help increase alertness and get those tired, aching muscles more energised, caffeine (traditionally in the form of strong, black coffee) will help clear a fuzzy head and reduce headache.

Whatever you do, DON’T drink another alcholic beverage to take the hangover away…

This is only a temporary fix-her-upper so don’t even attempt it. You’ll just end up feeling worse.

If all else fails… SLEEP some more. It’s New Years day after all and no shops are going to be open.

Happy New Years Pouters!

Peace and Love xoxox

Basic Wellness

20111207-164559.jpg

Hey Fabulous Pouters!

So we all trying to keep fit and healthy in the busy lifestyles people have now a days, yet most people struggle due to the fact that they are so busy.

We all need to keep it simple, and remember the basics about what our bodies need and what they don’t need, we often put our bodies through stress because of the type of foods we eat or by not giving our bodies time to relax.

I am going to give you our Pouters some helpful tips one should use, whether you male or female.

Tip 1: Replenish your energy.

Energy is essential in this sleep-deprived, over stretched, high-speed world.

-Firstly we need to add more alkaline-forming foods into your diet, such as green leafy vegetables, almonds, dates, celery,

-We must now get rid of excess sugar as this can cause fluctuations in blood sugar level which can cause plummeting energy levels.

-Insufficient protein can cause lowered energy levels, so pack some almonds and nuts for a quick convenient snack.

-I know this will be hard for our very own Sandylash, yet we need to cut down on the intake of coffee, as coffee initially raises stress hormones and gives a rush of energy. Try to gradually cut back on the coffee intake.

-Take time for yourself, at least a 20min relaxation period, where you do nothing stressful, like read a book, have some tea in the garden, listen to some music, or a soothing bubble bath.

-And the all time common one is drink plenty of water.

Tip 2: Revamp your diet.

-Start your morning right, have breakfast! Eating breakfast has shown it prevents over-eating during the day. Stick to a healthier option for breakfasts, either high fibre, or a smoothie, some yoghurt and muslei.

-Eat more veggies, try stick to veggies that are most natural as these contain the most nutrients.

-Cut out butter or margarine, these are both tasteless fatty substances we use to create the illusion of something tasting better, all you tasting is the salt that’s been added into these products. Rather cook with olive oil or avocado oil.

-Cut out fizzy drinks, they packed with sugar and are overall not good for you, if you feel you really need a fizzy drink choose Appletizer, their fizzy drinks are a lot healthier than the others.

-Cut down on the in take of carbs, if you are gaming or doing any type of sporting activity make sure you have your daily carbs before your workout. Don’t eat carbs later than 4pm.

Tip 3: Improve your digestion.

-Chew, chew, chew! Take smaller bites, put your fork in between bites, thoroughly chew each bite of food, do not rush when you eat. If it helps use chopsticks to eat, this will cause you to slow down.

-Increase your dietary fibre. Eat dried fruits, beans and legumes, take an apple to work.

-Practise mindful eating. Slowly savour the flavour of the food, and be aware of how much of the food is enough. Create a peaceful atmosphere to eat in, this will prevent you from rushing and you will enjoy your meal more, which will help with cravings later on.

Tip 4: De-stress your schedule.

-Write it down. Have all your events, meetings, plans, birthdays, etc written down and planned out in a diary of some sort, so you can see where you have space open to make further plans, or to prevent missing important events or meetings.

-The five minute rule. If a task comes up and it’s going to take less than five min, do it there and then. It will help from those little jobs building up, without impacting our productivity.

-Think carefully about the things you take on, do not over crowd yourself with things to do, this will lead to you disappointing either yourself or someone else if you can’t handle it.

Tip 5: Move your body.

-My all time favourite is to get into the gym and get moving, there is nothing better than a great workout, 20-30min of medium intensity exercising daily is sufficient to keep the body going, but it has never harmed anyone to push a little harder and do a little more.

-Target your ‘core’ this is the area around your trunk and pelvis, including your abs and lower back. Targeting these muscles, not only gives you nice abs, but gives support to your lower back. A week core over time can lead to bad posture, lower back pain and injury.

-Try new and different exercises, otherwise you’ll get bored and lose interest.

-Make gym your friend and enjoy the time there, don’t turn it into something you dislike

Stick to the basics when it comes to health and wellness, and your body will thank you for it!
