Marvellous, Mediocre & Meh at the 2014 Golden Globes

Although I might be a bit late with an update of the Golden Globes that were held this past weekend, I did laugh seeing Mnet broadcasting messages throughout the weekend to watch them live at 3am on MONDAY morning (late afternoon/evening in Beverley Hills)…. I can think of better things to do at a time like that, sleep is most definitely the best option and that is what I was doing.

I can’t bring myself to watch these award shows they are always so long winded but I do take a guilty pleasure in looking at the beautiful people, some wearing attire with a certain ‘it’ factor and others wearing things that look like they got dressed in the dark…

Marvellous

Kate Beckinsale

Kate Beckinsale Golden Globes

This lady literally radiates from the red carpet, shining bright in her dress which has a gorgeous silver bustier top and thigh skimming maxi skirt with a mermaid tail which was adorned with rhinestones and which resulted in the dress glowing in the lights of the carpet. Kate’s face was left fairly toned down which complimented a messy-but-perfect updo and her look was finished off with Jimmy Choo shoes and an Edie Parker clutch in black.

Taylor Swift Taylor Swift Golden Globes

I cannot believe it, but Taylor Swift looks amazing to me. Normally I don’t pay a second glance to her but she ticked all the boxes for the Golden Globes ceremony from  her toned down makeup with a bright red lip or her simple but striking Carolina Herrera dress, paired with Christian Louboutin shoes, Jimmy Choo clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery I cannot fault her look. Guest Contribution : How to choose the right metal jewellery for your big day

This bride has a mixed skin tone with chocolate coloured eyes yet creamy, pinkish skin you can see on the collarbone. Silver with a warm-coloured stone flatters both tones and the slightly off-white dress.

As with any outfit, making sure your accessories, clothing and shoes match is a vital part of the dressing up process. This is even more important on your wedding day. Every bride wants to look their best and a co-ordinated outfit will definitely give you that flawless, beautiful look. When it comes to accessories one of the easiest ways to make sure you’re outfit is well matched is to choose the most flattering metal jewellery.

The most vital aspect to look at is your skin tone. But how to you figure out what yours is? Here are a few tips. I’ve omitted hair colour is it’s often irrelevant as dying hair is so common.

Cool tones:

  •          Have pink undertones if skin colour is light or little undertone or a hint of sallowness if dark (Azealia Banks is a great example of dark cool skin). Skin looks a crisp and almost cool to the touch.
  •          Eye colour is blue, grey or almost black.
  •          Looking at your veins in direct sunlight they appear blue.
  •          You have been told you flatter the colours blue, jewel green, pink, blue-based red, pure black and pure white etc.

Warm tones:

  •          The skin colour is often in the mid-range; if dark or pale the undertones are yellow and make the skin look warm.
  •          Eyes are usually warm tones of brown, green and hazel.
  •          In sunlight your veins look green.
  •          You’ve been told you look good in off-white or cream, brown, orangy reds, wine coloured purples and natural greens. If you look good in khaki you’re probably warm.

Once you’ve got a rough idea what metal you should suit take a look at your dress. There is more than one tone of white! Crisp white dresses with hard lines, simple sleekness or lots of diamante will often look better combined with silver jewellery. If you’re dress is one of the colours listed in the cool section silver is definitely the best choice. If the dress has an invitingly warm hint it’s likely to be an off-white colour, which is far better with gold pieces. Often dresses with ruffles and dresses with a lot of volume look better with gold jewellery as gold can be worn more simply while still looking luxurious. As above, if the dress is cream or any of the listed warm colours gold is definitely the way to go.

The big issue is that most of us are a mix of skin tones. You could look great in a champagne coloured dress but not look good in gold. If this is the case stick to the metal you know looks good on you. To bring colours from the opposite end of the spectrum look for details in the dress’s colour spectrum. If you have a cream dress but are cool choose silver jewellery, look for some with off-white pearls or stones in a warm colour such as amber or ruby. As a cool toned woman myself I’ve used similar silver jewellery with amber to warm up my daily outfits too! This is both a great way to make your jewellery stand out as well as harmonise the wedding outfit colours. To cool down gold diamonds are always a good choice, or look for pure white pearl and stones in jewel colours such as sapphire and emerald.

One last area to consider is the style of your wedding. If you’re wearing a dark blue silky dress you’d think silver jewellery is the answer, but if you’re getting married on a sunny beach gold and its association with the summer holidays would suit the wedding far more (your skin should be getting a nice warm glow from all the sunshine anyway!). A more formal, traditional wedding might mean that silver jewellery flatters you best, while a wedding out in nature might require you to stock up on natural materials like pearl and stones and experiment with both metals for the best affect.

I hope this gives any bride-to -be some ideas for choosing the best metal jewellery for their big day. Having a rough idea of the colours that fit together takes a huge chunk of stress out of matching your dress and your jewellery together.

Guest Contribution : Six Beauty Tips to Add Glamour in Women’s Grooming

Ever wondered why grooming is so important? You can have that perfect face and those envious curves to die for, but with a sloppy jeans and that 90’s hair-do you can lose out on a lot of things, you never thought you were meant to own in the first place. Beauty most obviously is about being your own self, nobody is asking you to be a plastic, but grooming is what enumerates beauty, it’s more like teaming that red belt with that little black dress. So here’s six beauty tips that would definitely add glamour to your lifestyle:

Sleep Well

The first and the most important beauty tip is to sleep well, for a minimum of 6-8 hours, that ways you would look fresh. It is important not to wake up with exaggerated dark-circles or puffed eyes, if you look fresh, that makes you feel fresh. So you walk into that board room looking just as good as you were may be two years back.

No Revelations

Women love attention, but it is important to attract the right kind of attention, you don’t obviously want to get mugged. So avoid revealing dresses under all possible circumstances, appear tact and not desperate. Wear properly fitted clothes, with body lines that suit your body-types. Wear what makes you comfortable and respectable.

Mmmmm… Fragrance

It is pivotal for a woman to smell nice, you cannot go out there looking like Angelina Jolie and smelling like a mule. Obviously, not everybody can afford the Chanel No 5, but that does not mean that none of the other perfumes are worth it. Pick out a fragrance that defines you as a lady- summary, sweet and naughty. Avoid perfumes with strong alcohol content and do not apply them directly on skin. Oh and your neck and that wrist, mandatorily requires a sprinkle before a night-out.

 Accessorize it Right

Accessories play a very important role in defining you. Mix and match is a concept which hardly ever goes wrong, but remember do not end up looking like a junk-box. Keep it minimal. It is not always mandatory to accessorize yourself, however a sling bag and a belt is hardly something one can go wrong with.

The Hair and the Make-up

One needs to have an extremely good understanding of how much is too much. The hair and the make-up should be minimalistic and totally based on the place you are supposed to be at. Creating that messy up-do can bring out oomph in the evening party, but would give straight from the bed appearance in the office board-room, not what is expected. For hair, the safest is keeping it straight or rolled into a tact bun, and for daily make-up a little shimmer, soft kohl eyes and a little lip balm should do the trick. Again it’s not always about the skin care products you use, but how you use them.

Comfortable Feet

Lastly, it comes down to the saving grace. Your feet. It is important to moisturize them well, you don’t want them scarred and ugly. When it comes to the shoes you wear, make sure they are comfortable and suited for the place. It does not always have to be high heels, but cannot always be loafers. Pick a shoe that helps you glide and not just walk.

The beauty tips being there, and the skin care products to hide your flaws at their own place, always remember being beautiful is about being confident. Smile a lot, and everything else would just fall into place.

Animal Nursery Editorial Controversy

Hi Poutlings

upton3

Here are some photos from a Harper’s Bazaar photo shoot featuring Kate Upton and some exotic fur babies. There is a lot of controversy, of course, as there always is with Miss Upton. However, before I touch on that, please can I confess – I love Kate’s styling in these photos. It’s very retro, but it’s incredibly flattering. I love the fact that no boobs are pushed on you when looking at these images, and I lovelovelove the fact that Bazaar has some hair and makeup people who weren’t hypnotised by her boobies and actually put some great effort in to make her look great!

upton2

The controversy? The editorial is aptly named “The Animal Nursery” and the theme is that Kate, is not only a largely talented breasted model, acting as a nurse to baby animals, and she poses winningly while holding up various kinds of animals.

upton4

The shoot was styled by Carine Roitfeld and it will appear in all 26 international editions of the magazine. This is hardly the first time a major fashion magazine appears tone deaf about how fashion editorials are accessorised. Vogue recently went under fire by using actual babies as accessories for fashion shoots, and just a couple of months ago, Vogue did an absolutely terrible shoot in the areas of New York which were drastically affected by Hurricane Sandy. So, where does “using endangered baby animals”” fall on the list of editorial disasters?

Fashionista reached out to Harper’s Bazaar, but no one at the magazine would issue any statements. Fashionista also reached out to Zoological Wildlife Foundation, which apparently provided the animals for the shoot, and they wouldn’t go on record either. But, as always PETA did, FYI – I am not a fan of PETA however their statement was interesting…

“The gibbon featured in the photographs is an infant and should be with his mother at all times. Besides the emotional trauma that he has undoubtedly suffered as a result of the separation, his delicate immune system is still developing, and he is susceptible to illness that humans carry. All the animals in the photographs are endangered and should be protected rather than being treated like props.”

Now, PETA, are melodramatic all the time, however – if all of what they are saying is true, (I’m not claiming to know because I am not a vet), then the gibbon should most definitely be with its mother. Damn. As for the little tiger… I think he is adorable. I wish he would follow me home and he could be my tiger for life. I bet he has super sharp kitten claws though… and to honest, that is what bothers me most about this shoot – that they had all those babies together on the set. What if the baby tiger thought the gibbon was a playmate and those kitten claws come out and then…? Disaster.

upton5

Anyway, what are your thoughts?

x missfitz
