Jennifer Lawrence at the Golden Globes 2013

Hiya Poutlings!

Jennifer Lawrence is one of my new favourite style stars to watch.

jlaw01

Though Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior 2012 Haute Couture strapless corseted gown had me on the fence on the live red carpet, and in any of the outdoor images, however it really wowed onstage later.

jlaw02

When she first arrived, I was sort of happy to see another red gown, so she could stick it to Zoey Deschanel (I am not her biggest fan). The Gaultier-esque bust did bother me initially. I felt like it was squinting at me in the sunlight.

jlaw03

I will say that the addition of Raf Simons signature note from that collection, the metallic belt, lifted the oddness of that weird red and defined the wonderfully awkward silhouette.

jlaw04

As you can see from the indoor pics, how that colour sings out of the sunlight. It’s perhaps the sheen to the fabric.

jlaw05

The new face of Miss Dior went for a glittering metallic box clutch…

jlaw06

..and minimal jewels with a cocktail ring and drop diamond earrings.

jlaw07

Complemented with hair and makeup as fresh as it was dramatic. Perfect for a young actress making her debut.

Brava, darling.

That dress certainly grows on you the longer you look at it!

P.S. Check out Jennifer Lawrence’s interview with Elle and see what a healthy body image she portrays.

Remember that Time Jenny McCarthy Had Sex With a Tree?

Hiya Poutlings

I am aware that the title of this post is going to baffle your minds if you haven’t heard this ridiculous story, but read on just a little and you will understand why I titled it that and nothing else. PG 13.

Autism “curer” and “literary genius” Jenny McCarthy is promoting her newest book “Bad Habbits : Confessions of a Recovering Catholic” and she learned the best way to sell a book is to spill some ridiculous scandolous (not really) secrets about all the time she did drugs and fucked a tree so hard that it squirted sap like it’s never squirted sap before.

BACKGROUND FOR THOSE THAT ARE NOT AWARE OF WHO SHE IS: For those that are not aware, she is an American model, comedian, actress, author, activist and game show host. She began her career in 1993 as a nude model for Playboy and was later named the playmate of year. More recently, she has written books about parenting and has become an activist promoting research into enviromental causes and alternative biomedical treatments for autism. She has claimed that vaccines case autism – claims which are considered false by the medical community.

It’s been reported that Jenny writes while partying she popped so many Ecstasy pills that it made her take off all her clothes (like she needs Ecstasy pills to do that) and practically rub her what nots all over the tree and screw it.

“The texture felt so good that I decided to rub my head and boobs all over it. It was a tree I was humping.”

She then writes that her friends who were also rolling hard got paranoid and wanted to run to the road for help.

“I noticied that we weren’t wearing anything. So I responded `let’s not. We’re naked. Let’s just try to sneak back to the beach to get our clothes.`”

so… according to Jenny sticking any vaccine needle in your child is wrong, will probably send them to an earthly death and anybody who does it should be dragged into the town square and stoned – BUT – eating a bunch of ectasy pills and then forcibly having sex with a tree until you birth out an acorn baby is okay and not wrong? Good to know. Thanks for clearing that up, Jenny McCarthy, M.D.

Yes, in this case M.D. stands for MANIACALLY DUMB.

All Scorned Women Could Learn from Liberty Ross

Hiya Poutlings

So, everyone else covered it, and, it was very over rated. The Kirsten Stewart/Rupert Sanders cheating scandal. I thought we didn’t need to, because it was everywhere, IN YOUR FACE everywhere… so we only posted a few times on our Facebook page about it… but no where near as much as anyone else.

However, the one couple I have felt sorry for through this was Rupert Sanders’ wife Liberty and undoubtly, their two children. So that brings me to my post today: Kirsten Stewart could learn a lot from her former friend-turned-love-rival, the beautiful Liberty Ross who has spoken very eloquently on her attitude to life in the past year

“… sometimes, when things seem really bad, you have to be able to see the good and learn from it, and just move forward as graciously as possible.”

Liberty, who is now 32 years old was talking as she was being filmed backstage as she prepared to walk in ALEXANDER WANG’s show at New York Fashion Week last month.

There was no pointed fingers at the press or paparazzi or anyone else, no staring at the floor as Kirsten does, simply, an honest appraisal of how she managed to get out of bed and get on with things in face of a very public humiliation at the hands of the one person who should have her back and she should be able to count on at any time, not just when the going gets tough.

Liberty and her husband, Rupert Sanders, who is 41, were snapped leaving marriage counselling at the weekend, which, whilst being huge in the states, is a step rarely taken by Brits who’d rather have their toenails pulled out than talk about their feelings when in a relationship.

Meanwhile, I do not give a flying fuck whether Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart are back together, I do hope that Rupert and Liberty iron out their problems – given the fact that they have two kids – be it together or apart but at least for the sanity of their kids, hopefully its not an uncomfortable home environment.

Liberty’s a case book study in how a woman should act in public when dealing with a cheating husband: put on your makeup, your best clothes, hold your head high, your mouth shut and remind him at every turn that he risked throwing it away.

Do people deserve second chances? Yes, in certain cases.

He’s a very lucky man, I’m not sure if I were in the situation I’d give him such a generous second (or is it more than that??) chance.

All he’d have got from me would have been a carefully-aimed Christian Louboutin right in the nuts and an expressive-worded letter in post from a divorce lawyer.

Liberty, is a lady on the hand, and like her, I probably would of forgiven him eventually. The kiss/kafoofle/whateverthefuckhappened with K-Stew was no doubt more sexually satisfying for Rupert than an afternoon in a IVF doctors office toilet with a plastic beaker and some dirty magazines…. but it was also 100 times more humiliating.

What are your thoughts?

I think – GO LIBERTY ROSS!

THE BLACK ISSUE : Pioneering Models of Colour

Hellooo Poutlings!

With living in South Africa, the racism card likes to be used often, because of our troubled past. Unfortunately, I do not believe this will ever go away, but what people do not realise is that it is not only South Africa that has overcome problems when it comes to racism.

Enter, the modeling industry. Diversity has never been the modeling industry’s strong card, as highlighted by Vogue Italia’s groundbreaking “Black Issue” from 2008. What was so groundbreaking was the fact that it happened at all – an international fashion magazine drawing attention to racism in its own industry.

With this in mind, I’d like to point out that before this publication, “The Black Issue“, there was a massive movement of women of colour fighting for their rights to be in the fashion industry, here are some of my favourites highlighting their stides on and off the runway.

PRINCESS ELIZABETH OF TORO – 1936

The daughter of the King of Toro, one of the four tribes that originally ruled Uganda, Elizabeth was the third black women to ever attend Cambridge University and Uganda’s first female lawyer. When England’s Princess Margaret invited her to model in a charity fashion show, Elizabeth’s modeling career took off and she graced the pages of Vogue and the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in 1969. She later moved to New York where she modeled for the legendary Irving Penn.

NAOMI SIMS – 1948 – 2009

Before there was Naomi, there was Naomi. The first black supermodel, Naomi Sims worked overtime to break into what is still a largely racist industry. Naomi officially made it when she appeared in a US national AT&T commercial, the cover of Ladies’ Home Journal and the cover of Life All in 1968.

IMAN – 1955

With her long, graceful neck and statuesque beauty, Iman looks like she was actually plucked out of a Somalian village and thrown on a runway, but in reality she was discovered by photographer Peter Beard while she was studying political science in Nairobi. Upon coming to New York in 1975, however, she happily played along with the myth that Beard had discovered her as “a teen tribeswomen tending 500 cattle and sheep in a Kenyan game preserve”. What followed is one of the greatest careers in modern fashion history : a muse for Yves Saint Laurent, Issey Miyake and Calvin Klein, an entrepreneur and the one women to tame David Bowie.

MOUNIA

Mounia was Yves Saint Laurent’s first black muse and his favourite model. She was also the first black model he used in his haute couture shows. Mounia rose to prominence following YSL’s classic Porgy & Bess show, which he designed around her and led to covers of WWD and French Elle.

DONYALE LUNA 1945 – 1979

Pegg Ann Freeman escaped the slums of Detroit, USA, for the glitz and glamour of NYC. Here as Donyale Luna, she was was exotic and intriguing whereas in Detroit she “wasn’t considered beautiful or anything.” At 6’1″ with her already striking features and ultramarine contacts, she was in high demand, becoming the first black women to cover British Vogue in 1996. Donyale lived like, partied like and dated rock stars only to eventually die like one when she overdosed in 1979.

BEVERLY JOHNSON 1952

Bev Johnson’s name will go down in history as the first black women on the cover of US Vogue in 1974, a watershed moment for models of all diversities. Bev logged over 500 covers in her career before embarking on a mildly successful acting career and starting her own line of wigs.

BILLIE BLAIR – 1946

A former nursing student from Michigan, Billie became “New York’s newest superstar model” and the “standard of female beauty” after setting Paris ablaze as one of the stars of the Battle of Versailles in 1973. She commanded $400 a day – years before Linda Evangelista wouldn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 – though still making her one of the best paid runway models at the time.

GRACE JONES – 1948

Part supermodel, part mental patient, dart disco/New Wave/dancehall queen, Grace Jones is an enigma, wrapped in a question, wrapped in a kimono. Her distinctive style and personality are a constant source of inspiration for musicians like Rihanna and Lady Gaga to magazine editorials, who find her a favourite subject in particular… is it any wonder? That type of crazy comes along once in an androgynous moon.

PAT EVANS

Black, bald and beautiful. Pat shaved her head in the 60s as a protest against the modeling industry’s obsession with straight hair. The decision proved fortuitous for Pat, leading to appearances in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and perhaps, most famously, a quartlet of album covers for The Ohio Players. In 1974, Pat threw it all away when she published a scathing article in Essence magazine attacking the industry’s racism and its discrimination effectively ending her career.

PAT CLEVELAND

Pat was discovered in the subway in 1967 by fashion illustrator Antonio who admitted that he thought she was ugly, but with his help she became a dynmic and versatile force in print and on the runway. Along with Blair, Cleveland was one of the black models that entranced the French during the Battle of Versailles.

Like Sandylashxx has mentioned before, Black Most Definately is Beautiful.

Alessandra Ambrosio in Trouble With PETA

Hey Poutlings!

PETA is pissed off again, but this time they are utterly peeved with model and Victoria’s Secret AngelAlessandra Ambrosio because of the latest pictures snapped of her on the beach by the paparazzi.

PINK AND PURPLE POOCH

PINK AND PURPLE POOCH

PINK AND PURPLE POOCH

PINK AND PURPLE POOCH

PINK AND PURPLE POOCH

These pictures caught my interest for two reasons. She just gave birth on the 7th of May and her 31 year old body seems to be back in tip-top, banging condition and the second reason is she has a little dog, who you can see in these photographs is dyed purple and pink, and well, PETA has had a shit fit.

“What most people don’t know is that dyeing a companion animal’s fur can cause the animal stress and lead to complications or allergic reactions that endanger the animal’s health.

Our dogs and cats love us regardless of how we look; why not extend the same kindnessto them?”

PETA has also had a shit fit when Emma Watson, was seen out with that turned out to be a friend’s pink-dyed puppy called Darcy.

Darcy, the puppy, who was dyed pink from having close to R1,080 treatment at Groom Dog City in Bethnal Green, East London. The owner Stuart Simons told the media:

“Emma has dyed Darcy twice. Pink is our biggest colour, but I do look after another bichon called Casper who comes in for a blue mohican. All the dyes I use are completely animal-friedndly. They are made from vegatable dye. I wet the dog, rub it on like shampoo, leave it for five minutes and then wash it off. Because Darcy is white, it takes really well. She is a very calm dog, absolutely lovely and she enjoys her groom. Lots of people say it’s cruel to dye a dog but I say it takes no time, it doesn’t affect their skin and they don’t look in the mirror and go, ‘oh, I’m so embarrassed’. Rather they get so much attention in public, it can’t be a bad thing.”

@PINKDARCYDOG BEFORE THE TREATMENT & AFTERWARDS

To try and calm the social media outrage on Twitter, Emma posted a tweet saying:

“Ayeye. Just to clarify one more time that I don’t have a dog. @PinkDarcyDog is pink because her owner is raising money for breast cancer.”

Basically, PETA‘s latest mission in life is yelling about people dyeing their dogs. I don’t really have a strong opinion about that either way – I think the act of wanting to or dyeing your dog is plain stupid, for sure, but I’ll acknowledge it is not harmful to the dog if the owner makes sure that the dye is organic and fur-friendly. I have to admit though, Alessandra’s puppy is extremely cute and so is Darcy the dog. Is it because the puppy is pink and purple? Not really. The puppies just has a really cute face.

What do you guys think? Will you be dyeing your pooch’s and pissing off PETA? I won’t be, my dog finds being bathed traumatic, never mind a whole dyeing session.

Do you think PETA should focus on bigger issues than people just letting their puppies have dyed fur?
