US Vogue : Bad Taste of Heartfelt Artistic Homage?

Hiya Poutlings

For its February issue, US Vogue employed Annie Leibovitz to shoot an editorial drawing attention to the relief efforts of the first response emergency services during and in the aftermath of the superstorm Sandy in November 2012.

There is an understandable air of “WTF” around these images that seem tot want to do good, but are clearly rewarding Anna Wintour’s high-fashion advertisers. In promoting goodwill and bravery and dedication of these men and women who have worked tirelessly to get New York back on its feet, is Vogue just lining the pockets of Oscar De La Renta et al?

Though Vogue supported “Fashion for Sandy Relief Auction” and is said to have raised $1.7 million (roughly R13,600,000) and global awareness for the cause, this spread can’t help but leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. Couldn’t we have just seen pictures of the actual stars – and omitted Karlie Kloss and co. from the proceedings? A non-fashion shoot would have made a bigger statement and celebrated the efforts appropriately – Vogue donating pages to the cause.

I have a strong stance that fashion editorials pegged on natural disasters or any disaster fro that matter are in bad taste and whilst I applaud the the $1.7 million that Vogue’s auction has raised, I believe the Annie Liebowitz images would have been stronger without the fluffy watering down element that sticking models into the pictures brings.

However, does the spread with the $1.7million raised from the charity auction justify it? It may, just. Oscar de La Renta was a participant in the auction and while so many people have lost everything, is the awareness better than nothing?

Bad taste or a heartfelt artistic homage?

VB & Karl Lagerfeld

Hiya Poutlings!

It’s not everyday that Karl Lagerfeld deems a fashionista worthy of being photographed in Coco Chanel’s iconic former Paris home at 31 Rue Cambon, so it’s really impressive that he chose our favourite Spice Girl, Vicky Beckham over someone like say, Blake Lively, because I thought was his new dress up doll of choice these days.

Is it just me or does Karl Lagerfield need to STOP calling himself a photographer? He really doesn’t have a “photographic eye” – these photos are extraodinary boring even for a fashion shoot done by one of the most famous fashion designers in the world. Karl is simply an icpon because he designs for Chanel and because of his hilariously bitchy and grumpy interviews – not because of his photography!!

I have to hand it to Posh, I mean Vicotoria for her seamless transition from Spice Girl and football WAG into a well respected style icon and designer; they’re aren’t many former pop starts who ever enjoy the same level of high-fashion success.

“First pictures from my ELLE cover shoot with Karl Lagerfeld, a dream come true! X VB

At 31 Rue Cambon wearing my new optical collection on the iconic CHANEL staircase shot by Karl Lagerfeld! X vb. ”

Vicky tweeted these photos this week from a recent shoot for Elle France, where she appears alongside Karl Lagerfield modeling pieces from her new eyewear collection. What she doesn’t model, however is pants, and that is completely understandable – if my legs looked like that, I wouldn’t wear pants either.

Here are some highlights from the Elle France piece:

“Victoria Beckham says French people are “so chic” she sometimes feels like she is from the country. The signer-turned-designer features in the pages of French Elle magazine alongside legendary designer Karl Lagerfeld. The pair are posing at the former home of Coco Chanel, with Victoria gushing about how much the experience meant to her.

“I’m honoured to be here in Paris. I love Paris and the French style, so chic. Sometimes I feel a little French myself” she said.

The star shot the images earlier this year, when she updated her Twitter fans on how much fun she was having. She is seen standing on some stairs next to Karl, with her hair in a demure chignon. She is wearing a black cape with the tiniest of briefs, with her long legs on disply. A pair of high shoe boots finish the look.

In another she is seen in the same shorts, this time with a white shift tucked into them. She is wearing eyeglasses- perhaps from her upcoming range – and appears deep in thought.

“I am thrilled to shoot with Karl. I have so much respect for him so inspiring,” Victoria said. “To shoot in Coco Chanel’s apartment in the clothes of the house of Chanel is really a dream come true.”

Karl is currently the creative director of Chanel and is known for his acid-tongue. It seems he has been charmed by Victoria, as he only has kind words for her.

“Victoria has an innate sense of style. She knows what she likes, and knows what is good for her,” he said.”

Okay, everyone knows, I LOVE VICTORIA… but… SHE FEELS A LITTLE FRENCH???? Should I speak for the French and say “Posh, please.” First she was the very essence, the very archetype of British WAG-dom, and then she eased that look into a more American-ised, laid-back-unfussy California style with English-mod influences, and now, she’s trying to claim she’s got the soul of a French woman?? NO, Posh, you do not!!

Still, I bet she proud to have been Karl Lagerfeld’s “muse” for a brief moment. Maybe Karl will speak to Anna Wintour on Posh’s behalf.

LFW: saying “Fabulous” In a British Accent

Hiya Poutlings

Hope you’re all doing faaaabulous!! Anyway, anyone been keeping up with London Fashion week? Well, I have, but very briefly.

Who are the front row fame ho’s at this Fashion Week? Well, its certainly not lived up to the celebrity drenched hub that is NYC.

Even New York this year wasn’t up to it’s usual star-spotting standard. This year was just dull in having couples who add up to one mega star between the two of them, I mean Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas or even Kim Krapdashian and Kanye West *vomit* I’d much rather have a Gwen Stafani or a Tilda Swinton over those couples, you know, people who really are known and matter substantially more? Yes. Those!

London, on the other hand has been even more disappointing. A group of “It” fashionaista models, Laura Bauley, Poppy Delevigne, bloggers and self-affected children, Alexa Chung, Kelly Osbourne, Pixie Geldof… oh and of course, Lady Gaga jumping up and down looking for attention, again… a bit like an annoying little dog, but worse.

The highlights of the lowlights so far:

At Henry Holland, Alexa Chung tells the other spiffingly fabulous fashion twigs how she doesn’t even know why anyone is interested in her.

Kelly Osbourne interrupts and offers advice on how to wear sunglasses and speak in two accents at once. And say “all fashion” all the time on TV.

At Burberry, Anna Wintour having a old girls meet ‘n greet with photographer Mario Testino. She actually looks her age in this snake print suit from the cruise ship boutique.

Dita Von Teese starts an impromptu outdoor burlesque by sexily dropping her umbrella then remembers she’s wearing corseting that renders her incapable of even scratching her head and waitis a knight in a shining retro tuxedo to save her.

Who ever the hell Tali Lennox is (I guess by the name she is Annie’s kid – maybe!), I like her Burberry Prorsum swag.

Who ever the hell this chick is needs to go back to her struggling artists loft and brush her hair…

Samantha Cameron wonders why she can’t sit with a bitchy fashion blogger or a child of celebrity.

Child of American music royalty, Daisy Lowe shows no sign of her step mother, Gwen Stefani’s style, grace or genuine rock ‘n roll attitude.

14 year old Marc Jacobs’ muse Elle Fanning shows up to Topshop Unique straight from school… Aaah, does it make you miss how glamourous school uniform can be? hahha. NAAT.

Olivia Palermo does it up proper fashion, like also at Unique. She has an uncanny ability to make you want to buy clothes that will make you look like you are wearing a black plastic bin bag.

…well that’s all for now folks.

Anna Wintour Shared Her Very Own Vogue Story

Hiya Poutlings

Anna Wintour has took to Vogue’s Internet presence on the evening of the magazines 120th anniversary, last week Tuesday (14/08/2012) to have some nostalgic moments of the begginings of being editor, and also to divulge a little secret with the world…

 Her first cover.

Vogue Cover November 1988 featuring model: Michaela Bercu, photographed by: Peter Lindbergh and styled by: Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele

November 1988, brought forward a fresh unchartered frontier at Vogue, unlike the brief of any past versions, for those of you who are unaware, a model wearing jeans on the cover of the most gradiose magazine was a very new concept and it reinforced that Anna Wintour wasn’t one to hesistate in revolutinizing the standard of the magazine to something even more mind blowing.

Anna Wintour

I must admit that I was  suprised by Anna’s positive attitude towards causing havoc in the halls of couture and embracing a model that didn’t fit in a sample size (well, at that very moment, for what it is worth.)
