Unique Gifts from Love Milo

Soon, as we have welcomed the month of November, we all need to start thinking about gifts for the festive season. It can truly be such a stressful period making sure you get everyone that perfect something. I am incredibly relieved to have discovered the wonderful products from Love Milo for a lot of the special ladies in my life. I am a huge fan of giving people tea pots, mugs and cute kitchenware. I am completely besotted with Love Milo and their unique cute pieces in their ceramics range.

Love Milo was founded by Nicki Ellis in January 2013, and is a proudly Cape Town based brand. Nicki fell pregnant with her son Milo in 2012 and she was inspired by motherhood to create even more beautiful things and thus the contemporary brand, Love Milo was born.

“I started getting all sorts of ideas about new things I wanted to do and create. I felt as if he was the catalyst for my newfound passion and artistry. I thought it only fitting to name the company after him.”

Here are some of my favourites that I think might feature on my Christmas gifting this year…

MALE MODELS : The Female Species

Hiyaa Poutlings!

Andrej Pejic, *clickety click* the androgynous, biologically male beauty who rose to notriety as a working female model, ushered in the changing tides of a new non-gender conformative face to fashion. Cast in editorial and runway positions that were previously only filled by women, he became the singular poster child for a new born generation in the world of modeling with no trappings of traditional gender roles or the gender bender as I like to refer to it.

But don’t ask Casey Legler about terms like gender identity and gender expression : for the New York City based “art maker“, the topic is not sex, it’s freedom.

“It would be a really beautiful thing if we could all just wear what we wanted, without it meaning something.”

Casey Legler is a former Olympic swimmer – so it seems understandable, if not expected, progession that she, at a striking, willowy 6″2′, is one of the first (if not the first) women to be signed exclusively to a men’s modeling contract.

After participating in the Olympics for her home country of France at the age of 18, Casey paved her way as an artist working with multiple mediums. Her art, which she frequently appears in, reflects on overriding themes like the constructs of time, ritual and the human body, and it’s her work that led her to an entry into modeling – friend and high profile photographer Cass Bird asked Legler to improvise a man’s role for a shoot in Muse magazine this past summer. The editoral found its way to the desk of an agent at Ford Models, and Legler was signed to their male roster the next day.

As her for her future in the industry, Casey is optimistic.

“I wish a long and slow career for myself, for everyone.”

Yes, you will be seeing her on the runway early next year – Casey will walk in shows in both Paris and New York for the Autumn/Winter 2013 season.

Johnathan Paul Thinks You’re Addicted to Drugs

Contemporary artist Johnathan Paul also know as Desire Obtain Cherish, thinks we’re all a little addicted to fashion’s jagged little pill. Commenting on consumers sudden need for uncontrollable fashion splurges, Johanathan’s work includes a series of large, wall mounted pill sleeves mocked after the branding of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, YSL and Hermes.

Definitely the kind of drugs we’re willing to pop.

Giant Lipstick Cube, Anyone?

Hiya Poutlings

Leave it to the FRENCH to come up with a fresh, creative, avant-garde use for a practical product from one of their most iconic brands : conceptual artist Fabrice Hyber has created a 150kg, one meter cube titled 1m3 de Beaute of solid YVES SAINT LAURENT Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in shade 1 Le Rouge.

150kg = too much

Fabrice Hyber (who, its worth noting, is male) told WWD of his masterpiece

“Lipstick is a material that is very supple, especially in a large quantity. The material permanently moves. It is a work that is never finished, which is always evolving. It’s a living oeuvre.”

This makes total sense to me, as I know from experience that the buttery Rouge Pur Couture formula tends to make a melty “living oeuvre” out of my stupid face. The sculpture has just gone on show at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

If you happen to be in the neighbourhood, take a lip brush.

Lindsay Lohan has done it again, and creeped me out…

Heya Pouters

Lindsay Lohan, has done a really interesting photoshoot, just to clarify by interesting, I do not mean that it is a “wow, awesome” sort of photoshoot, rather a “wow, this is really effing weird and kind of sad and it makes me feel uncomfortable kind of photoshoot“.

In her latest photoshoot with Terry Richardson, we get to see Lindsay loading a gun, holding it to her head, holding it under her chin, and putting it in her mouth, all while looking like she is going to burst into tears. We also get to see her smoking a lot, what’s new, and posing in various minimal clothing but I feel like the gun in the images is supposed to be focus here, so much that Terry Richardson removed them from his site. His choice of model for this is a good idea, bearing in mind how much of troubled soul Lindsay Lohan is, and these images bear a constant reminder that she is so troubled.

I don’t even know what to think… These images just feel so creepy and incredibly wrong to me, almost a mockery of the suicide part. I get that there is something “artistic” in death, but for the purpose of this post, more so suicide and hence why so many people try to portray it in various ways be it painting, songs, drawings, sadly photo shoots that are always poorly pulled off.

Just like these images, I don’t see much ART going on here, and yes, don’t get me started, art is supposed to provoke an emotion and make people think twice, I am aware of this, I know it all too well, however – I do not see how the way these images have been posed and/or captured artistically apart from Linday portraying SOME emotion in a few shots, apart from that, they just look cheap to me. So, maybe it is art, as its caused me to write an entire blog about them, but I just do not see it as art, or even remotely artistic.

Dont even get me started on this image above. But really, if I have to see Lindsay Lohan modelling, I’d at least like to see her doing something a little more fashionable, or artistic than hanging out of a hotel room with a gun in her hand… or is that just me?
