Red Square have gone Digital

Hiya Poutlings <33

RED SQUARE

Red Square – famously part of the Edgars group has finally launched an online store where you can get some of your favourite beauty and perfume brands online! They have also stated that they will offer a “free” sampling programme, simply put that when you order online you can choose three sample items to try, at no additional cost. It sounds very Rubybox-esque but it sounds good to me.

Red Square have also taken into account that we, beauty bloggers as a whole are quite loud and proud about our purchases and that we want to share our product experience and knowledge with people on the web, be it via social media, blogging or review sites, and have catered for this on their website providing the opportunity for the consumers to post comments, make recommendations or even give advice about the products on offer in order to strive for consumers to make more informed choices….

The goodies you buy from Red Square can also be gift wrapped with a personalised message on the card…. this sounds like it could be an absolute save for last minute birthday or anniversary presents for the men out there 😉 Look out for perfume-presents, ladies!

Orders over R350 have free delivery, any order under that amount would be subject to an additional R45 on your purchase price. Payments can be made via credit card, or any Edgars or Jet account. HELLO 6 MONTHS INTEREST FREE CREDIT.

I’m really loving the fact that they have finally launched in the correct direction, local South African online stores will most definitely soar over the next few years but I am suprised that they did not think to do this previously…. The website on a whole, is a bit boring for a company with such an established brand however it is still early days and they may actually liven it up a bit.

It however amazing that we can now shop these amazing brands online without having to pay for parking. The brands on offer include (the links are to our previous articles on the brand/person): Antonio Banderas, Avril Lavigne, Azzaro, Beautique, Britney Spears, Burberry, Bvlgari, Cacharel, Calvin Klein, Carolina Herrera, Chloe, Christina Aguilera, CK One Color, Clarins, Davidoff, Diesel, Dolce & Gabana, Dunhill, Elie Saab, Elizabeth Arden, Elizabeth Taylor, Escada, Estee Lauder, Ferrari, Filorga, Giorgio Armani, Gosh, Gucci, Hugo Boss, I Love…, Imedeen, Issey Miyake, Jean Paul Gaultier, Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Choo, Joop!, Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian, L’Oreal Paris, Lacoste, Lancome, Lanvin, Madonna, Marc Jacobs, Montblanc, Nails Inc., Narciso Rodriguez, Nine West, Paco Rabanne, Placecol, Puma, Quorum, Ralph Lauren, Revlon, Rihanna, Roberto Cavalli, Shakira, Swarovski, Taylor Swift, Ted Lapidus, Thierry Mugler, Trind, Usher, Valentino, Van Cleef & Arpels, Versace, Viktor & Rolf and last but not least Yves Saint Laurent.

I’ll be sure to let you know about any of my purchase experiences from Red Square and how the service is versus the service in the actual shops! Last time I visited Johannesburg, I had superb service at the Sandton City store!

Are you going to check out Red Square online?

Be sure to let me know your experiences, if they are before mine!

P.S. Be sure to check whether or not your chosen brand is cruelty free or not as I do note that some of the above mentioned companies are in fact still not cruelty free!!!

Style Watch : Adele

adele style

At a glance, its hard to recognise an awkward 20 year old back in 2008 when she got a chance to record her first ever album, is in fact, the powerful women that Adele is today.

Adele-style

Now, Adele is turning 25 is very well known not only in her home country but all across the world, for her powerful voice and distinguishable style.

adele - brit awards

She recorded her first album in 2008, which was entitled simply “19” and that was the time she started to appear in the public eye a lot. That is when her style preferences began to emerge, The shy girl in the formless clothes started to appear at events, such as the Brit Awards (where she won the Critics’ Choice Award), H&M Regent street store, London and Shepherds Bush Empire, London. coming to more feminine pieces, her body also began to change.

Adele-styleee

In 2009, she wears a chartreuse satin coat by Barbara Tfank, to attend the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, Los Angeles. She looks confident in that bright outfit. Then again she has shown up in public wearing Barbara Tfank, this time it was a custom made black-satin dress.

Adele-style2

AdeleIn 2010 her style started to resemble her current look, as she appeared in a vintage black and gold brocade dress at the CMT Artists of the Year awards in Franklin, Tenessee. As time passed, her style progresses and in 2011, we saw her wearing a Burberry dress at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she won three awards. She once confessed to US Vogue that:

“From twelve to thirteen I was a grunger. then I got really into R&B and became a rude girl – in Addidas, with a spit curl… and tiny Nike backpacks.”

So, having this as a background, it is really weird to relate to that girl in Nikes to the woman, Adele is nowadays. Because today she is more likely to be seen “with her favourite Jimmy Choo Rosabel bag, or in Vivienne Westwood or Aquascutum, although she still confesses to loving Marks and Spencer jeans”, as mentioned by Vogue UK.

Adelegrammy

Now finally, into the previous year of 2012, she has appeared looking rather slim comparing to her previous looks wearing custom made Giorgio Armani sequin gown, accessorised with a Harry Winston ring, De Beers earrings and Christian Loubutin heels during the Grammy Awards, where she won six awards! At the latest Golden Globe awards, which had been her first public appearance since giving birth to her son, Adele was wearing Burberry. Certainly, we see there is something different about her now, as she has shared her beauty and talent with the world.

So, what do you think – has her style evolved?

Skinny Minnie…

Hiya Poutlings

I breifly touched on this issue on our Facebook Page. The Barneys New York holiday campaign Electric Holiday featuring fashionable yet ultra skinny versions of Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck has officially ticked off plus size models and eating disorder specialists.

DESIGNER MINNIE MOUSE

Plus sized models Robin Lawley, Lizzie Miller and Courtney Legare have joined 135,000 supporters in a Change.org campaign against skinny versions of Disney characters Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck for the Electric Holiday campaign, which calls to cancel the holiday window display featuring 5’11” size zero versions of Disney cartoon characters. Eating disorder experts and celebrity endorsements are adding fuel to the campaign against “skinny Minnie”, saying instead of it being a light hearted campaign, it’s sending a negative message to young girls and…

DESIGNER DAISY DUCK

“there is something wrong with changing a beloved childrens characters body so it looks good in a dress that almost nobody looks good in – adding to the tremendous pressure on young girls and women to attain photoshop perfection. The problem isn’t with Minnie’s body, it’s with a dress that only looks good on a woman who is 5’11 and a size zero.”

DESIGNER GOOFY

Barneys and Disney released this joint statement countering the campaign saying…

“We are saddended that activists have repeatedly tried to disort a light hearted holiday project in order to draw media attention to themselves.”

Barneys creative director Dennis Freedman explain his reasoning about Minnie’s smaller frame…

“The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence because these characters don’t change. I said, ‘if we’re going to make this work, we have to have a 5 foot 11 Minnie,’ and they agreed. When you see Goofy, Minnie and Mickey, they are runway models.”

Coming from a fashion industry professionals perspective, this is not out of the question. If Minnie and Goofy were to star in a fashion campaign, then they should look like models who walk the runways.

While the campaign is bringing attention to important issues such as eating disorders and how the fashion industry affects body perceptions, are these versions of Disney characters viewed through a fashion lens controversial or truly light hearted?

With the complaint that high fashion skews skinny anyway, we aren’t seeing anything new here. Many fashion designers make clothing specifically for smaller sized individuals. Even Balenciaga admitted to cutting their clothing to flatter smaller sized customers only and Karl Lagerfeld stated that he believes that anorexia and the fashion industry are not related.

But the industry is slowly starting to change. Burberry is collaborating with Adele to create their first plus-sized line and Ralph Lauren used their first plus-sized model in a campaign (ironically model Robin Lawley is one of the models speaking out against “Skinny Minnie”). The creative director of Barneys did state that the traditional Minnie would not look good in a Lanvin dress, but that’s a problem with the industry. Harrods is doing a designer Disney princess themed window for the holiday season that highlights what the Disney Princesses would wear wear if they wore couture designer dresses. Is there a difference between the two? Why is the one receiving more negative press than the other? Maybe this calls for another blog post…

Now, I turn to you dear readers. What are your thoughts on BARNEYS ELECTRIC HOLIDAY VERSION OF MINNIE AND DAISY. Will our future generation of children’s body perceptions be affected by these altered versions of their Disney favourites or are they innocent interpretation from a fashion perspective?

Let me have your opinions, s’il vous plait.

LFW: saying “Fabulous” In a British Accent

Hiya Poutlings

Hope you’re all doing faaaabulous!! Anyway, anyone been keeping up with London Fashion week? Well, I have, but very briefly.

Who are the front row fame ho’s at this Fashion Week? Well, its certainly not lived up to the celebrity drenched hub that is NYC.

Even New York this year wasn’t up to it’s usual star-spotting standard. This year was just dull in having couples who add up to one mega star between the two of them, I mean Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas or even Kim Krapdashian and Kanye West *vomit* I’d much rather have a Gwen Stafani or a Tilda Swinton over those couples, you know, people who really are known and matter substantially more? Yes. Those!

London, on the other hand has been even more disappointing. A group of “It” fashionaista models, Laura Bauley, Poppy Delevigne, bloggers and self-affected children, Alexa Chung, Kelly Osbourne, Pixie Geldof… oh and of course, Lady Gaga jumping up and down looking for attention, again… a bit like an annoying little dog, but worse.

The highlights of the lowlights so far:

At Henry Holland, Alexa Chung tells the other spiffingly fabulous fashion twigs how she doesn’t even know why anyone is interested in her.

Kelly Osbourne interrupts and offers advice on how to wear sunglasses and speak in two accents at once. And say “all fashion” all the time on TV.

At Burberry, Anna Wintour having a old girls meet ‘n greet with photographer Mario Testino. She actually looks her age in this snake print suit from the cruise ship boutique.

Dita Von Teese starts an impromptu outdoor burlesque by sexily dropping her umbrella then remembers she’s wearing corseting that renders her incapable of even scratching her head and waitis a knight in a shining retro tuxedo to save her.

Who ever the hell Tali Lennox is (I guess by the name she is Annie’s kid – maybe!), I like her Burberry Prorsum swag.

Who ever the hell this chick is needs to go back to her struggling artists loft and brush her hair…

Samantha Cameron wonders why she can’t sit with a bitchy fashion blogger or a child of celebrity.

Child of American music royalty, Daisy Lowe shows no sign of her step mother, Gwen Stefani’s style, grace or genuine rock ‘n roll attitude.

14 year old Marc Jacobs’ muse Elle Fanning shows up to Topshop Unique straight from school… Aaah, does it make you miss how glamourous school uniform can be? hahha. NAAT.

Olivia Palermo does it up proper fashion, like also at Unique. She has an uncanny ability to make you want to buy clothes that will make you look like you are wearing a black plastic bin bag.

…well that’s all for now folks.

MODEL ALERT : Julia Nobis

Heya Poutlings!

I love sharing with you some of the fantastic models I think are real ROLE MODELS to anyone that is aspiring to be the best model they can be… and let’s be clear, I’m talking about REAL modeling, not just looking shit hot to be some masturbation material for teenage boys and balding men! Actually, making a living from modeling, people paying you to do it… You know what I mean, right? Good. Let’s continue….

Last time, I introduced Anja Rubik, who is no less than amazing and such a HUGE name in the industry. Today, I present a model who is young, relatively new to the industry compared to Anja, but I think we haven’t seen the apex of this particular models career to date.

JULIA NOBIS

Julia Nobis is no doubt a rising star. She was only discovered in 2009.She has a unique look with a particular strong appearance. She’s known for playing guitar backstage before a show.

BEFORE AND AFTER BEING DISCOVERED WALKING HOME FROM SCHOOL

Julia started modeling locally, in Australia, at the age of 16.

Her first time on an international catwalks was during CALVIN KLEIN fall 2010 in New York and she exclusively walked only for them.

The next step on Julia’s modeling career was during the same season but this time on the runways of London Fashion Week. She opened the fall TOPSHOP in London and also closed the RICHARD NICOLL show. During her time in London she got invites to Milan and Paris and she ended up walking for PRADA, DOLCE & GABANA, LOUIS VUITTON, VALENTINO, MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA and MIU MIU Fall fashion shows and as you can imagine she became well known as one of the best newcomers into the fashion world to date.

Later on in 2010 she walked for her first couture show, VALENTINO HAUTE COUTURE in Paris.

2011 Spring fashion shows she opened and closed the POENZA SCHOULER fashion show and also walked for BURBERRY, ALEXANDER WANG, LOUIS VUITTON, CHANEL and BALENCIAGA runways. She also presented looks at the spring CHANEL and ELIE SAAB couture fashion shows.

During Spring 2012, FASHIONTV’s FIRST FACE COUNTDOWN featured Julia Nobis as number 3. She was beat by Anja Rubik and Amyeline Valade.

Currently, Julia has only been on one fashion magazine cover, Australian Vogue featured her in 2011 where she posed for the photographer Kai Z Feng.

She has appeared in a number of editorials for British and Italian Vogue, i-D, Dazed & Confused, Interview and W Magazine.

What I particulary love about this model is that she lives an alternative lifestyle, she has broken the international stereotype of MODEL! Julia is really into martial arts, some of her favourite bands are Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stoneage and Rage Against the Machine. She has the perfect mix in her book of “alternative” or should I say edgy shots combined with standard commerical and high fashion couture! The proof is in this models book, and I think she’s got it nailed. Don’t you??

So, models and models-in-training, are you inspired?
