SKNLogic Renew Footbalm

Renew FootbalmAbout six months ago my paws got hold of a foot balm from SKNLogic and following this, I received another footbalm from SKNLogic in a goodiebag from #BWB. I had not yet used the first footbalm given to me in December last year at an end of year function because I was busy using another. Anyway, roll on winter time 2014 which is peak season for me to do some serious foot/heel TLC before embarking on a whirlwind overseas adventure and I quickly grabbed my stash of SKNLogic foot balms. I have been using it religiously once a day after showering/bathing and if I’ve had a long day in heels a good slap of this wonderful stuff on my feet before bed is just what is needed! In a short and sweet summary – my feet feel fabulous!

I have just started on my second footbalm after cutting the tube open of my first one because I didn’t want to waste any of the amazing moisturising concuction which soothes sore feet (especially after long days of plodding along in heels).

The SKNLogic Renew footbalm contains amazing ingredients like cucumber extract which hydrates while removing dead skin cells, Vitamin E which protects the skin assists with maintaining the skins oil balance, Orange Oil which works as anti-inflammatory and improves the skins elasticity, Shea Butter providing intense hydration, accelerates healing and soothes the skin, Fig Extract which promotes new cell growth and hydrates regulating trans-epidermal loss and not forgetting the sunflower oil, wheat germ oil and steric acid.

The SKNLogic brand is growing on me, even more so when I learnt that the products are manufactured locally in South Africa with packaging and printing being done here too. If they are not an incentive to support local, then I don’t know what is. To find out more and view their other products visit their website, Facebook and Twitter @SKNLOGIC.

The Renew Footbalm retails for R85 (75ml) and is available at salons and spas nationwide.

Getting High on Sugar at 15 On Orange

Macaron Workshop 04If you like to live life in the sweet lane (rather than the savoury) or occasionally like to dabble into the art of baking or like to hang out at the latest coffee spots or just watch the #foodporn tag closely on Instagram when you’re hungry you surely would of heard of a Macaron/Macaroon. I am not cool like the rest of you and I had certainly heard about Macaroons in the past but I have never been offically introduced to one. This weekend was my chance and it was not only an introduction but an entire crash course into the the true art of making them.Macaron Workshop 01

Being inherently lazy by nature baking in all forms always seems like a lot of hard work, or should I say, the cleaning up after baking seems like a lot of hard work! So I generally steer rather clear of messy things. With that being said though, I do silently envy all the talented people in my life who seem so domesticated I wonder where my convent school upbringing sent me on the wrong path. So, being given the oppurtunity with the group of ladies who I have grown to call friends at #BWB to go and learn the art of Making Macaroons, my heart initially skipped a beat because OMG I CAN’T BAKE TO SAVE MY LIFE and my brain said – YOU CAN DO IT. So, needless to say I jumped at the opportunity to learn and eagerly responded to Heather, the founder of #BWB from FemmeLifestyle with an eager “I’ll be there!!”.

MACAROON WORKSHOP 2

Upon arriving and being greeted at the breath-taking, ultra modern Crystal Towers 15 On Orange, African Pride Hotel by Executive Chef Sanel and Chef Retha – who is undoubtedly the Queen of all Things Sweet, in a beautiful set up room with counters for us to share together, they spoke about the humble beginnings of the Macaroon and that it is in actual fact called a Macaron (and do not go to France and ask for a Macaroon as you will get stared at funny) but we in SA have butchered the name a bit. They taught us (or shall I say me, as all the ladies I was with already knew) the basics of how to whip up a merengue which is the basis of any macaraon but with added ground almonds or coconut.

A macaron shell is distinctive as it has a crisp crust and a soft interior which are light and airy but still slightly chewy…. The fun is really in the fillings. We were taught how to make Salted Caramel and Chocolate Ganache. Not being the biggest salted caramel fan in the world, I tried it but steered clear and it was Chocolate Ganache the whole way for me. I was initially very intimidated by making either of these fillings but they are really so simple and even I could do it…. that is saying something! 😉Macaron Workshop 03

We received extra tips and tricks for making these sweet morsels and the variables that can utterly end up with them being made to be put into the dustbin like the age of eggs, the heat of the oven according to its size and make or even the humidity levels of the kitchen. We were also shown how to pipe them correctly which is an art form in itself, it’s all the wrist!

We got an impromptu tour from Executive Chef Sanel and Chef Retha where chaos was the order of the day with LOTS of photos being taken, mirror selfies, and lots of giggles with some of my favourite ladies.

The Macaroon Workshop offered by 15 on Orange, African Pride Hotels is for groups of 12 or more and is not the only workshop they offer. For more information, call the hotel and ask to speak to banqueting on 0861 11 9000.

A huge shout out and thank you to Executive Chef Sanel, Chef Retha and everyone at 15 on Orange for an unforgettable experience and for the oppurtunity to learn how to make macarons/macaroons, You will definitely be seeing me again soon!  I am not sure if any will be coming out of my kitchen in the future, for now I think I’m going to be practicing how to make merengue and take it from there.

Sweet Beauty Sleep

Oh So Heavenly truly make the most wonderful products, or at least all the ones I have tried have been nothing less than lovely. Their entire range is huge and you should check it out at Clicks sometime! Beauty Sleep Pillow Mist 100ml

At a Bloggers Who Bless event, in a goodie bag I was given part of the Oh So Heavenly Beauty Sleep Collection, Wish Upon a Star Soothing Pillow Mist. The product is as it says, a mist you spray onto your pillow or bedding and the blend of aromatherapy with Lavender, Orange and Patchouli oils makes magic in your senses by calming your mind in order to inspire peaceful beauty sleep.

I have only been using my pillow mist for the past 2 weeks and I can truly say I love it and I never want to be without it. I sleep with 2 pillows, so before I go to brush my teeth and wash my face I spritz 2 sprays of the pillow mist onto my pillows and it makes my room smell gorgeous. The lavender is very powerful and luckily one of my favourite aromatherapy smells. I then proceed to the bathroom to do the admin of night time skin care routine and cleaning of teeth before retreating back into a heavenly scented room ready for some serious sleep.

Call it coincidence or the placebo effect but since I started using this little gem I have found that once my head hits that pillow it doesn’t take long for me to wind down and get sleepy and before I know it pass out entirely. I believe the bottle will last for ages and I would seriously recommend this to anyone that battles with sleeping, as there is nothing worse than lying in bed when you’ve been stressed and your body is exhausted but that mind won’t wind down and let you have peaceful, undisturbed sleep. So far, so good and I will be taking this spritz-bottle of happiness wherever I find myself on my extensive adventures over the next few weeks in order to get the best possible sleep.

Soothing Pillow Mist is available at Clicks nationwide and is R19.95 for 100ml.

PreCleanse Perfection

dermalogica-precleanseDermalogica is a staple in my skincare routine. From when I first started using them in my teenage years I have battled to find another product that just works for me as well as they do because of this, when writing about them I fear that I come across as though I am being paid to because I can never find anything wrong or anything I don’t like about the products. Dermalogica has been a part of me growing into the person who I am today and as my skin needs have changed over the years their products have always helped and assisted me to achieve the best skin possible.

At one of the Bloggers Who Bless or #BWB meetings, one of the goodies we received was a Dermalogica PreCleanse sample size in the wonderful Dermalogica “THIS not a beauty bag, this is an investment in your skin” campaign bag. Firstly, a lot of people that I have spoken to about PreCleanse have a little giggle at the thought, and I must be honest it does sound a bit redundant – lets wash your face before we was your face. Sounding like this could not be further from the truth as it is a necessity in my skincare at leas use PreCleanse even after a long day especially to remove stubborn makeup….

I start by pouring about a 50cents size amount into clean, dry hands, rub them together and gently massage in circular motions on my face. The PreCleanse is a unique formula as it is an oil. Do not freak out like most people do and think WHY WOULD I WANT TO RUB OIL ONTO MY FACE?? Well, this is simple, the specially formulated oil attracts all the excess oils and sebum present on top of your skin and stick them together. The PreCleanse specially formulated oil is water soluble (unlike oil in general which is hydrophobic) and once rinsed removes the PreCleanse and all the excess oils which have mixed together leaving you with stripped clean skin waiting for a real and proper cleanse. Using PreCleanse prepares the skin for a deeper cleanse resulting in your toner and moisturiser being able to penetrate the skin more effectively.PreCleanse

I experiment with crazy, wild makeup on my face often and I just have to state for the record that its the number one, best, most efficient makeup remover I have ever used in my entire life. Every single trace of eye shadow, glitter, waterproof mascara just melts when you apply the PreCleanse to your face. Like magic it disappears once rinsed. Not only does it help with removing makeup – after exercising or even walking on the beach it helps remove the excess build up on your skin of sweat, salt and all that yucky stuff  which in turn enables you to cleanse your skin thoroughly with the cleanser of your choice.

The problem with using PreCleanse for the first time (for me it was many moons ago) is that you realise that your skin has never actually been this clean before and then you are almost ruined and it is added onto Maslow’s Hierachy of Needs right at the bottom before Physiological!

The new altered version of Maslow's Hierachy of Needs thanks to Dermalogica :)

PreCleanse is available at Dermalogica stocked salons nationally and retails for R520 for 150ml.

Crabtree & Evelyn Hand Cream

Crabtree & Evelyn are a brand which silently but proudly portray luxurious British heritage. The brand stemmed from a family run business that made home-made soaps with an international themes which has since grown into a huge international company which is known for quality toiletries and they have stemmed into fragrances and even food. Crabtree & Evelyn are the ultimate hipster company as they made “natural” cool before “natural” was the in thing to do. Working in harmony with nature their products are inspired from a time when the garden played an important role in daily life and they use plant, fruit and flower essences for natural fragances and soothing solutions for the skin.

Crabtree Evelyn Ultra Moisturising Hand Therapy

From two of the recent #BWB or Bloggers Who Bless Cape Town meets – we have been totally spoilt with their wonderful handcreams. The one I’ve been using on my paws is the Iris Hand Therapy. Firstly, it is small enough to carry around in your handbag, they certainly pack a punch in these harsh winter months. They touch your skin and are absorbed leaving you with wonderfully smooth and soft hands that have no left over residue or greasiness. A real winter-must have. On top of this they leave your hands smelling absolutely gorgeous and long after use they leave a very faint scent of beautiful iris. These hand creams are award-winning and its not hard to see why. They certainly win my vote for best winter handcream for 2014 that I’ve used so far 😉 Have a look at the entire handcream range over here at their website.

For 50g this product retails at R180 but you use such a little product it can last you for ages so, its well worth the investment!

Crabtree & Evelyn are not only an easy solution for a gift for the special ladies in your life as their products will happily work in harmony with everyone, they are a healthy and smart choice for daily use.

What is your favourite Crabtree & Evelyn product?

Don’t forget to visit Crabtree & Evelyn’s website, like them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter @Crabtree_SA
