Nine West is Preparing Women For Crucial Times In Their Lives

Nine West has a sense of humour. I approve. They are showing it on their new campaign which highlights womanly occasions that whether we like to admit it or not are generally parts of our lives… and with any good advertising campaign they have come under fire, this time is from various vocal feminist organisations. I think that sometimes feminist groups need to sometimes get a small sense of humour and take a chill pill. Nine West - Starter Husband Hunting Kit

The Starter Husband Hunting is actually my favourite but has received the most critique because people perceive this to be saying “Starter Husband“, in other words your first marriage before a divorce when one of you moves onto someone else. I understand that the sacrament of marriage is sacred, I get it, you should not marry someone at all if you have any doubt that you will not love them when they are old and wrinkly but, can you please listen to yourself for one minute? It’s a poke from a company that wants you to laugh about it because whether you like it or not, these things unfortunately do happen in life. A mere advert is not going to promote any woman more so than they are already inclined to do to find a husband, starter or not. Calm yourselves please….

Nine West - First Day of Kindergarten Kit

The other category is  First Day of Kindergarten, the most offensive thing about this to me is the word ‘”kindergarten“, its preschool people. This is hilarious to me because I know of many mothers, my own included, that this applies to. She was always happy when school was back from holidays because she could finally breathe. I get it, even though I don’t have kids, I really understand. There is no need to make assumptions that Nine West is assuming that because you wear Nine West shoes you are a trophy wife who sits at home all week while your kid is in school with your feet on the couch drinking French champagne.

I really do love this campaign, I don’t think Nine West needs to take this further at all. They have received a request to do  Job Interview to show that a woman’s place is more crucial than just finding a husband and sending her kids off to school. If I, as a woman can laugh and relate to the advert, then I believe no on should find it offensive.  On top of it, I love Nine West. Feminists can calm down. I am all for a good giggle, when this is simply aimed at poking at what we as consumers do and think.

Well played Nine West. Even though its not Woman’s Day in the US, I think that this campaign is very apt for Woman’s Month in South Africa.

You can view the campaign on Nine West’s website here.

The Millennium Generation Facts

A recent study has been done by PewReesearch in the USA, which focusses on social and demographic trends.

I guess, from the reading the report that I too am a “millennial” as I fall into the category of the last generation to hit adulthood which ranges from people who are 18 years old to 33 years old. We were around and old enough to remember welcoming in the Millennium. The Millennium 02 Arena - London

Although the report was done on USA citizens, a lot of the findings are relatable world wide with the exception of the political facts which go quite American, rather than global which I have over looked in the report and left out of the facts I found most interesting. Despite the political facts, I found a lot of the facts relatable and more so interesting.

PEW RESEARCH CENTER

PEW RESEARCH CENTER

Here is a brief summary of the full report, which you can read here

  • Millennials are getting married later in life and at a slower pace than previous generations mainly because of economic hardships – this results in a lot of babies being born out of wedlock. A large amount, 69% said they would like to be married but money does not permit.
  • Half of the millennial identify as being politically independent.
  • Millennials are more racially diverse than any previous generation.
  • Millennials are not religious as previous generations, only 58% say they are “absolutely certain” God exists and 29% are not affiliated with any religion at all.
  • Millennials are the first generation in the modern era to be worse off in terms of poverty, unemployment, income and personal wealth than the two previous generations were at the same age.
  • However, with all the problematic issues the world is facing millennial are more optimistic than any other generation that the best is yet to come.

What do you think of the findings?

Unborn Baby Entered into a Beauty Pageant

Hiya Poutlings!

It’s never too early to start preparing your child to be a beauty queen…. at least, that is what mum-to-be Jenny Oliver thinks.

Crazy pageant mother in question - Jenny Oliver from Blackpool, UK.

Crazy pageant mother in question – Jenny Oliver from Blackpool, UK.

At seven months pregnant, she’s already entered her unborn daughter, tentatively named “Ella” into her first Bonnie Baby pageant.

“With my dance skills and her sister Jess’s knowledge of pageants, there’s no way she won’t win the prize for bonniest baby… It was only a tenner to enter her and I believe you should start them young. Ella will do so much better in life with all that experience under her belt… She’s only going to be three months old but she’ll have a bit of fun on the day… Walking down the catwalk with my gorgeous baby will make me feel a million dollars – even though I’ll still be carrying my baby weight and wearing baggy clothes. I hope she wins – it would be fab to have a baby sash and crown to add to the collection. I have so much planned for her.”

Can we just stop for a minute? Goodness. I feel stressed reading that. What about you? THIS POOR CHILD DOESN’T EVEN EXIST YET. I suppose they will start fitting her for a “flipper” the moment after her first feeding.

I have so many questions when reading this:

1. What if she doesn’t arrive on her due date.

2. What if her skin doesn’t take to spray tans well?

3. What if she doesn’t look good in nappies?

4. What if Ella is a boy?

There are too many unanswered questions here, and I feel stressed for a life that is even yet to live. What the hell is happening with the world?

It is worrying enough seeing toddlers dressed up in pink frills, covered in makeup and encouraged to be swoon-worthy in front of judges at teeny beauty pageants but its positively scary to think unborn babies are being lined up for a childhood spent being judged on how they look.

I rest my case.

Themed Weddings : Shrek & Fiona

…because true love means never having to say you’re sorry, or you know, justifying your weird obsession with the childrens movie “Shrek”. Jersey (as in the beautiful Isle of Jersey, not the state/shore in the USA/on MTV) couple Paul and Heidi Bellas got married as Shrek and Fiona from “Shrek”.

Shrek and Fiona

The pair got the idea – and presumably the buckets of green finger paint from their son Leo.

“The essence that is Shrek represents true love, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, if the love is there then that is what it is about.” said Paul.

The couple had to get special permission to get wedded in face paint. Jersey law requires couples getting married need to be identified.

I am truly happy for these two. Clearly, you have met your soulmate if you can somehow find the only other person in the world that wants to get married as “Shrek”. Just in case you were worried that these two would be ridiculed by their family and friends during the ceremony, the rest of the wedding party was dutifully dressed as fairytale characters too.

“I was standing at the altar, there were only three guests in the room and they were dressed up, as the lift opened these people started to sit down but there was one dressed as a Flinstone with big feet.”

Amazingly (sadly), this isn’t the first couple to get married as “Shrek”. In 2009, Christine and Keith England also said their wedding vows as Fiona and Shrek.

Let’s hope they live happily ever after.
