Babor HY-ÖL

Babor is a very unique skin and body brand which is all encompassing with precision science to ensure top quality results. You wouldn’t expect anything less from German standards. Having had only minimal experience with the Babor brand due to the high price tags, I was ecstatic to find that at the Babor Reversive launch earlier this year that we received their flagship product in a sample size which is soon to be celebrating it’s 60th anniversary, this product is simply called HY-ÖL, which I pronounce “High Oil” and I am not 100% sure if its correct but that’s what I’ve been calling it. Fast forward to later this year and myself and some other beauty bloggers received a private product preview of all the products in the Babor range and this HY-ÖL  has really caught my attention. HY OL

HY-ÖL is the flagship product of Babor as it was their ‘first born’, or should I say ‘first launched’ product launched onto the market which is still manufactured today and their ultimate best selling product with up to 15 million litres of product being sold every year. That’s a huge amount of HY-ÖL floating around!!

Anyway, cleansing your face with HY-ÖL makes cleansing something special with a style of its own. The cleansing system is a two step system; first step involves gently rubbing the Hy-Ol on your face which draws makeup off the skin, this is gentle on your skin and it acts like a dirt magnet and you literally feel your skin can breathe again, the second step is moistening your fingers with cool water and the Babor Phytoactive (prescribed to your skin need) into a milky cleanser and then rinse your face. It leaves your skin feeling conditioned and fresh. I never thought cleansing could be so therapeutic, but its an incredibly calming thing to do in the evenings before bed time.

According to the Babor South Africa website the application is as follows:

Mornings and evenings, gently massage 2 pumps of HY-ÖL® over the face, neck and décolleté. Immediately apply 1 pump of Phytoactive on top and blend together. Add cool water, massage until a milky emulsion forms then rinse off with plenty of cool water.

My skin is not conditioned to the Babor range and I did experience a mild breakout when using HY-ÖL for the first week but shortly afterwards it really started to become something I wanted to use each and every day. This HY-ÖL will set you back approximately R422 for 50ml but its definitely an investment worth making (it will also last you a while) and the CPhytoactive prices vary, for my combination skin I have been using and loving the Phytoactive Combination, which retails for R341.

Phytoactive Combination

So the total cost would be approximately R800 for my cleansing but as I said previously, it lasts for ages as the pumps are calculated to last.

Thank you Babor for educating me on your luxurious products, for me its easy to see why they are the staple of many beautiful faces around the world.

Disclaimer: The Hy-Öl was given to me to try out but I purchased the Phytoactive Combination to ensure that my skin needs were met. This has not altered my view of the product in anyway.

Guinot Hydra Tendre Review

A while ago, I was treated to a Guinot facial at Yemaya Spa & Hair in Sea Point for Cosmetix and Cindy Nell’s annual pamper party. One of the goodies I got given to try at home from my facial was a Guinot cleanser. This cleanser is part of their Hydra range which is probably not the most suited product for my skin needs but it certainly does hydration and it does hydration well. Guinot Hydra Tendre

Water is an indispensable source of life for the cells and well-being of the skin. A good moisture balance ensures a healthy complexion. The Hydra Tendre is described as being a “soft wash off cleansing cream“, and when applied to the skin you can literally feel it absorb into your skin as though your skin is absolutely parched, and as with most cleansers you rinse it off as normal with water and et voila – you have a clean smooth and hydrated face! The consistency of the cleansing cream is smooth with a light pink colour to it and it seems heavily fragranced and has a very perfume-y smell which is not unpleasant but I normally prefer less fragrance in my skincare products. When your skin is cleansed your skin feels soft and gentle and your face is left feeling refreshed.

I have been using the Guinot cleanser for the past 3 weeks and now my skin is actually over-hydrated which is not necessarily a problem but it is not the ideal solution for me as I do not suffer from dry or dehydrated skin so I will not be purchasing this cleanser again unless my skin needs change.

Unfortunately I have not been able to find the retail prices of what the cleanser goes for but it is available at Yemaya Spa and various other salons which offer the luxourious Guinot treatments for purchase.

PRODUCT REVIEW/ HOW I WORE IT

I finally gave into the hype at the beginning of the year and I bought my very own BB Cream! I have not really shut up about it since, and I feel as though I am a bit of BB cream product expert, one would think I am getting commission by the way I have been “selling” this product to people that ask me about it. My mother, aunt, cousin and best friend have all recently bought their own (not all the same brand) BB creams and they have also loved them. I have also been able to try them, so I will eventually review those for you too.

Sandylashxx wrote a post on WHAT IS BB CREAM… Check it out.

Because, I am a list person, I have broken down my Smashbox BB Cream experience to the following pros and cons:

yes

PROS

  • A natural finish
  • Fair selection of shades, actually pale enough for ghosts like me
  • Easy to blend
  • Portable
  • High SPF

noooot really

CONS

  • Price/ R390
  • No moisturising ingredients/ properties – NOT  moisturiser like other BB cream brands
  • Difficult to get all the product out the tube
  • Only 5 shades available – this is a huge drawback for potential customers but hopefully in time this is fixed….

This BB Cream is a good option for someone who has an even complexion, like myself, with barely any skin imperfections (I have a few, but I choose to ignore them). There is hardly any coverage to this BB cream. You would have to use a lot of product to get a sheer-medium coverage and using a lot of this expensive product in my opinion is a waste, however if you apply medium coverage foundation over it, you will acheive a sheer-medium coverage. The smoothing aspect of it, as it is a primer or pollyfiller as I like to explain to my clients that always ask what PRIMER is for, is definitely its best feature. The SPF for me, is also a huge deal. I am as pale as a ghost and needless to say, I am terrified of sun damage, automatically the higer the SPF for me, the better the product.

The application of the Smashbox BB Cream is MUCH easier if done with your fingers, it just blends easier. When attempting with a foundation brush, beauty blender, stipple brush or foundation sponge I feel that the product itself gets wasted (again, it’s not cheap and wasting is a deadly beauty sin especially at R390 a go…) and the cream doesn’t blend as easily as it does with the added heat of your fingers. I almost died when the Smashbox consultant used her fingers on my face, but I understand now that it just works better after trying many different applications myself.

I enjoy having the look of dewy skin,  because I suffer from an oily skin, I’m used to having loads of powder on my face and having a matte finish, this BB cream helps me have dewy skin for longer. You can happily add some powder initially (if you wish) or throughout the day as you normally would with a foundation.

My go-to makeup look for the last few weeks of summer of late has been as simple as cleanse, tone, moisturise, apply BB cream, dust a bit of bronzer on my face, Smashbox Jet Set Gel Liner to my upper eyelid, a bit of my Inglot brow gel and plenty of mascara for a fun, fresh, “no makeup” makeup look. Quick, effective, and it lasts for the whole day, even in the intense Southern hemisphere heat.

OVERALL RATING

8/10

WOULD I RECOMMEND IT?

Definitely! Try it TODAY!

Please bear in mind, this product may not be the same experience for you but chances are you will enjoy it all the same. Smashbox is available at selected Woolworths stores countrywide, so be sure to go and try it out and see for yourself.

Smashbox is also cruelty free so absolutely no fluffies are harmed in having your perfect flawless looking skin.

Winter Blues

Heya Poutlings!

Winter hasn’t even started and I’ve already got flu!!!!
I HATE having flu with a passion, nothing worse than feeling horrible due to some flu bug!
So I did a little research on the top tips to prevent the horrible flu bugs from attacking our amazing pouters!
The flu is a virus that is transmitted through contact with someone who is infected, by droplets through a cough or a sneeze, or through contaminated items, such as pens or any other daily items.
Preventing the flu!!!

1. Take your vitamins
Firstly I’m not one for taking multi-vitamins, personally they don’t work for me. However taking vitamins in different forms is essential to fighting the flu and also for staying healthy all year round. My best bet would be the vitamin B12 shot, and vitamin C and vitamin D.
2. Eat flu-fighting, anti-oxidant rich foods

An overall healthy diet will boost your immune system, but the following foods are rich in anti-oxidants and are essential in fighting against various viral infections. The presence of antioxidants in your body will ensure you stay healthy, longer.

– Spinach – High in iron and antioxidants
Spinach is low in saturated fat, and very low in cholesterol. It is also a good source of Niacin and Zinc, and a very good source of Dietary Fibre, Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Vitamin K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Manganese.

– Broccoli – High in Vitamins A and C
Broccoli is low in saturated fat, and very low in cholesterol. It is also a good source of Protein, Thiamin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iron and Selenium, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Manganese.

– Garlic – High in minerals such as copper, iron, zinc, calcium and selenium
Garlic stimulates the multiplication of infection-fighting white blood cells and also contains the phyto-chemical allicin, which has anti-bacterial properties.
Garlic is very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. It is also a good source of Calcium, Phosphorus and Selenium, and a very good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and Manganese.

– Blueberries – Packed with Vitamins C and E, and disease-fighting antioxidants
Blueberries are a good source of vitamins and minerals, such as potassium, iron, and vitamin C. Blueberries are also strong sources of dietary fibre. Each half cup serving of blueberries provides a full two grams of dietary fibre which is as much as in one slice of whole wheat bread.
Blueberries are among the richest sources of antioxidants and other important nutrients. Blueberries are also delicious, versatile, high in fibre, and low in calories.
The health benefits associated with blueberries include improved eyesight, stronger blood vessels, reduced risk of heart disease, reduced risk of urinary tract infections, better memory performance, and promoting and maintaining

– Oats – High in soluble fibre, which absorbs cholesterol and helps establish a healthy environment in your digestive tract.

– Water – Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to stay well hydrated. Water keeps the mucous membranes in your upper respiratory tract moist and resistant to infection.

– Cold-water fish – The omega-3 fats in cold-water fish, such as salmon and tuna, create high blood levels of flu-fighting T cells and interferon.

– Pumpkin – High in Carotenoids, Vitamin A and B-Group Vitamins
Pumpkins are a good source of Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Pantothenic Acid, Iron, Magnesium and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Riboflavin, Potassium, Copper and Manganese.
Pumpkins are high in beta carotene, vitamin A and other carotenoids that are powerful antioxidants. Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of healthy polyunsaturated oils.

Garlic stimulates the multiplication of infection-fighting white blood cells and also contains the phyto-chemical allicin, which has anti-bacterial properties.

3. Sleep more, stress less
Sleep rejuvenates and revitalises your body, and helps your immune system function at its best.
Deep sleep stimulates the thymus gland to produce T-cells, which are a type of white blood cell that helps reject foreign substances, and controls the production of antibodies to fight infection.
Sleep also helps your body deal with stress, which has a strong influence on your immune system. Stress triggers the release of adrenaline and cortisol—hormones that reduce your body’s ability to produce antibodies.
That’s why people who are highly stressed get more colds, suffer more digestive tract problems and are more frequent bouts of fatigue. Aim to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night, and practice relaxation techniques to help prevent stress.

4. Wash your hands frequently
With good old-fashioned soap and water (60 seconds).  Antibacterial soap, contrary to public belief, does not to a better job and in fact could be aiding more resistant strains of bacteria.

Some quick tips to keeping healthy ladies and gents, hope you don’t get attacked by the flu bug like me!

XoXo
Megs
