Winter Cures : Red Noses and Dry Lips

I’ve been sick for over a month. Blocked nose, sore throat, coughing and to make matters worse it only gets worse when it’s time for bed. The doctor hasn’t been much use, the pharmacist and I are on a first name basis and my medicine bill has grown so fast I don’t quite know how we got here but what I do know is that the red nose and dry lips are not hot, even if my temperature is. Letibalm Tub 10ml

Even though I have sniffles and an annoying cough, the show must go on. Important client meetings, seminars mean that looking good is not an option its a priority – building a brand guys 😉 image is everything!! Last month, just before I got sick I received a wonderful little media drop which contained a cute little tin, a packet of tissues and some Letibalm, a 10ml jar and a 10ml tube. They sell for R54.95 each and are available at selected Dis-Chem, Pink n Pay and selected pharmacies.

These little guys have been a God-send. No lies! As the skin on your lips and nose is so fragile due to thin skin in these areas and are usually the areas that suffer the most, add to it nose blowing and you’ve got the recipe for a red nose and very dry lips. I like to think of it as channeling my inner Rudolf the Red Nose reindeer, although no where near as festive but rather droll, even miserable. If women could get man flu then I would certainly have it right now, in case you can’t pick that up. Letibalm is the first solution for the whole area. Its not just for lips but its for the sensitive areas on your lips and the skin above and your red nose. When applied to dry lips and red noses you feel an immediate soothing relief with a slight tingle and I can only imagine this is down to the fact that the area of skin is so dehydrated that once the moisture comes into contact with it your skin is softly singing “HALLEJUAH”.

I refuse to go anywhere without my tube in my handbag and my little tub next to my bed. Letibalm Tube 10ml

Thank you Letibalm for letting me experience the best solution ever for my little pet peeve which is a result of a bigger peeve (the sniffles). For stockists or any other information please contact distributor IVOhealth on 0860 456 123 / info@ivohealth.co.za or visit their website here.

TRESemme Instant Refresh

The darlings from TRESemme sent me their Instant Refresh to try out. Instant Refresh is a DRY SHAMPOO, which essentially is a waterless shampoo which reduces the greasy appearance of the hair by applying a powder form spray to the root of the hair. Dry shampoo will never substitute for real shampoo which involves the use of the water to completely cleanse and remove grease but it is meant to be an in-between washing solution. While it reduces the appearance of greasy roots, the Instant Refresh gives also gives the hair added volume from the root which results that it is possible to style the hair in some ways which would not be possible with freshly washed soft clean hair.  Instant Refresh

I have been trying to use Instant Refresh on the days when I don’t wash my hair (I normally wash my hair everyday and I feel like my hair is dirty if I don’t), so I have been using sporadically, maybe once a week.  Directions for use are simple, shake the can vigourosly before spraying, part your hair into sections and lightly spray the roots in short bursts about 20-30cm away and then massage the product into your scalp with your finger tips and comb through your hair. Et voila, you have Instantly Refreshed hair (see what I did there?).

When I use Instant Refresh, my hair does feel look and refreshed but I know that my hair is not clean. Its obviously a thing I need to get over. I like to use Instant Refresh between washes if I am planning on wearing my hair up, either clipped, in a bun, in a plait or braided. I still can’t bring myself to wear unwashed (without water) hair loose but who knows, one day I might try soon.

Although I have my issues with dry shampoo, I have to say that my mother is completely besotted with the stuff. She gave me a mini can of Instant Refresh before I went overseas for my Italy trip which I used here and there and I am slowly trying to warm myself to using it but I really need to get over the fact that simply because my hair has not been physically washed that it does not appear clean.

Jessica Alba TRESemme

Matthew Monsoor is TRESemme’s celelbrity stylist and his suggestion for the Instant Refresh is to use to give last nights curls brand new life.

Last night’s curls can be revived into boho-chic waves with a twist, by using the right products to re-awaken the volume. Adding braids gives a pretty finish.

200ml aerosol of Instant Refresh goes for R76.99 and is available at Clicks and Dischem nationwide.

Get Big Lashes

As I previously stated Essence have set their standards high regards to Essence as their I Love Extreme mascara. Trying this one after finishing my tube of Lash Mania Reloaded was exciting but I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my high Essence expectations – its only their fault they set the standard so high with their award winning mascara! 😉Get Big Lashes

The huge bonus is that this is waterproof. Waterproof mascara often makes me wonder why all mascaras are not waterproof. The brush is very thick fibre. It seperates the lashes to some extent and coats them very well creating lots of volume. I think it made my eyes appear open and it kept the curl to my lashes which is one of the many things I look for in a mascara! The formula lasts all day, with no smudging and I find it ideal to wear 2 coats and if I am going out in the evening I like to add another coat to my 2 coats I’ve worn all day and I find it just makes your eyes more ready for the evening ahead.

Get Big Lashes is easily washed away when using my Dermalogica PreCleanse and it isn’t incredibly hard to clean off your eyes which I’ve found with other mascaras that are waterproof.

I find this rivals Essence’s I Love Extreme but I don’t believe it can replace it!

It retails for R44.50 and is available at Clicks, Dischem and Medirite pharmacies.

Lash Mania Reloaded

My experience with Essence mascaras is slowly getting more and more in depth and to date my favourite Essence mascara would have to be big pink tube, award winning Essence I Love Extreme in comparison the Essence Lash Mania Reloaded False Lash Mascara does not quite live up to my love of that one but it is by no means bad.

Lash Mania Reloaded

The brush and bristles are very flexible with 6 seperate bristles which seperate and comb lashes individually very well, however if you have curled your lashes before applying the mascara then the wand happens to straighten your lashes out and making the curling process rather redundant. The formula of mascara is of medium wetness (its not super wet nor is it incredibly dry) and I think this is why this happens, it does undoubtedly increase the length of lashes and it builds well upon the second coat applied. I wouldn’t recommend a third coat as this is when lashes start to comb together into one.

I do like to thickness and length it provided to my lashes but I would still rather buy the I Love Extreme over this Lash Mania as my lashes are naturally very straight and I like to have a bit of extra curl to open my eyes up. With everyone having different lashes, just like we all have different hair types,  this is not the mascara for me in terms of what I look for, but if you have very curly lashes naturally and are looking for added length and good separation then I would say that this is the mascara for you.

Essence is available at Clicks, Dischem and Medirite pharmacies and this mascara retails for R53.95.

Get Your Glow on This Summer with Caribbean Tan

Rumour has it when my legs came out of the trousers I’ve been wearing over the very cold winter in Cape Town and saw sunshine for the first time in a while the sun decided to run away for a while, only to return last week.

irish-girl-sunbathing

This predicament can easily be avoided, with no added harm to your skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays which have been so commercialised that people are either really petrified of them (like me, who generally avoids the sun) – good excuse, I’m British! OR have just given up on trying to protect themselves from the dangers and have a very meh approach to skincare and the sun – like TANNING MOM!

20130904_145912

A few weeks ago at Cindy Nell’s Pamper Party at Langaro in Camps Bay, I was formally introduced to Caribbean Tan. I have heard about the wonders of Caribbean Tan from a few of the ladies in my family who are crazy about false tans, and have been for years. As a general rule, I’ve avoided them. I’m okay with being pale. In fact, I prefer it to being sunburnt and/or orange.

Caribbean Tan though on the other hand, does not burn you or make you orange. All it does is give the skin a good healthy glow, which lasts for up to two weeks. I was recommended due to my dislike of previous fake tan applications to try the Tanning Mousse which is a Gradual Colour in shade A, which retails at Dischem and selected pharmacies for R84.95, that the mousse will be an easier application with limited streaking.

I won’t bother explaining the process of applying it, as its as simple as exfoliating, getting clean, putting some cream on and voila, a tan develops over time.

Really not rocket science. Really simple.

They told the truth – it worked! I managed to attend a family function wearing a dress last weekend and I didn’t blind the people walking by.

I am not sure if my cynical approach to fake tans in general have been converted but for special functions and when I sometimes feel like a little bit more of colour is needed to wash away my pale limbs and body, I will definitely turn to Caribbean Tan over any over brand I’ve tried previously.

Caribean Tan

Within the Caribbean Tan Range, they have various other products which may excite the Tanning lovers interests and they retail as follows:

Tan in a Can – Instant/Gradual Colour – R84.95

Tanning Spritzer – Instant Colour – R84.95

Tanning Mousse – Gradual Colour (The one I have and spoke about above) – R84.95

Wipes – R44.96

They have Pre-Tan products of Body Exfolia for R44.95

and Tan Extender products of Moisturising Shimmer Cream for R44.95 and Intense Body Butter for R44.95.

I would certainly buy this product again, especially as a head start before a beach holiday… it really is the best tan I’ve used, ever.
