Let Rooibos Fix You

Just like in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding, where the older relative thinks that Windowlene will fix everything, South African’s are no different, with rooibos, but possibly with a bit more science to back up their claimrooibos bushs, rooibos will help your problems. We love drinking our rooibos tea, its benefits are widely known and even get some international recognition.

Reasons why we drink rooibos include, but are not limited to:

  1. It is a refreshing drink.
  2. It is caffeine free, which means its safe for everyone to drink including children and pregnant ladies.
  3. It has strong anti-oxidants which protect the body in a number of ways, including fighting free radicals and has very strong anti-inflammatory properties which helps prevent heart disease.
  4. There are studies that suggest consumption of rooibos tea results in a reduction of cancer causing chemicals.
  5. It is rich in minerals, like the soil it is grown in. Some of the minerals are magnesium for the immune system; calcium and manganese for healthy teeth and bones; zinc for the metabolism; and iron which is important for helping blood and muscles distribute oxygen.
  6. It can resolve tummy cramps.
  7. Protects against Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.
  8. Encourages a restful sleep.
  9. Research suggests that drinking rooibos may assist in weight management, as part of a healthy lifestyle.
  10. It can relieve skin conditions.

So, have you added “DRINK MORE ROOIBOS” to your new years resolutions? Me neither. I don’t believe in resolutions… and I will tea regardless of whether its on a list 😛

african extracts

Toward the end of the year I received the African Extracts Rooibos Skin Care as a present which is made using rooibos which is grown in the Cederberg mountains. African Extracts is designed by South Africans for South African skin. As rooibos contains a phunylpyretic acid, which helps improve acne, psoriasis and eczema you can actually apply a cooled tea bag to affected areas on the skin for a jump start to soothe and heal any inflammation but if the thought of this sounds a bit dramatic and possibly crazy, the African Extract range is able to address your skin concerns and provide all the benefits of rooibos tea bags on a daily basis in your skin care routine. The powerful antioxidants in all the African Extract products protect you from harsh environmental stress and pollutants.

Cleansing_LotionThe soothing cleansing lotion retails for R47.00 and is just that, I used it when my skin was aggravated after being in the sun and on a game drive for a few hours and once I had finished cleansing my skin had calmed down tenfold, and felt refreshed. Continue reading

Clere Radiance

A few weeks ago I was privileged to be invited to the launch of a brand new South African skin care product from an already a well known house brand for their affordable and readily available hand and body cream ranges. Clere have launched another alternative for the South African consumer, when it comes to skincare, Clere Radiance. Rolling out to retailers from 1 October 2013.

The main difference from the various competitors? Each item in the Radiance range boasts a unique attribute, they all have 3 purposes, which offer women softer more beautiful even tone skin. The “secret” ingredient, so to speak is the specially formulated Super Fruit Serum which is an anti-oxidant.  Anti-oxidants prohibit free-radicals which are linked to the source of inflammation and premature ageing. Super Fruit serum also leaves the products with a very light and beautiful smell. Each item in the range can be used individually or in combination with one another which means that if you are unsure about the range – BUY one product and try it, without having to use all products simultaneously. Once you start seeing results, which are easy to see you will want to try more in the range.

Choose your first product by selecting a 3-in-1 step which targets your specific skin problems. The basics of each product are as follows:

Clere Radiance Oil Control Beauty Bar

100g. R9.99

A bar of soap for facial cleansing to clean any excess sebum, remove impurities and leaves the skin feeling soothed with a matte appearance.

Clere Radiance Oil Control Toner

CR-Skincare 100ml Toner Carton

100ml. R14.99

A toner which cleanses the skin of impurities, whilst toning and a matt even tone appearance.

Clere Radiance Oil Control Vanishing Cream

50ml. R19.99

Two options in the range with one for Normal to Oily Skin and the other for Oily to very oily skin, the cream is applied to a cleansed face and keeps oil under wraps for up to 12 hours while nourishing the skin with Vitamin E and leaving the face with an even tone.

Clere Radiance Even Tone Complexion Cream

CR-Even Tone Tube Carton

50ml. R25.99

To be used on cleansed and/or toned skin the cream keeps controls oil while reducing any dark spots and marks for even skin tone. The added bonus is that this product also protects your skin with SPF 15 sun protection.

Vanessa Marawa

The products have impressed the stunning Vanessa Marawa, winner of Survivor South Africa 2006 and radio presenter of Vuma FM and she is now the FACE of Clere Radiance – does she not have the most amazing skin?

Keep a look out for the products in a supermarket near you and let Clere Radiance – the local, easy and affordable way to let your inner beauty shine through.

lamelle : Nourish Multi Active Sun 30 Review

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post however this product was sent to me for reviewing purposes. This has not altered my view on the products in anyway.

Have you heard about lamelle? lamelle Research Laboratories are cosmetic dermatology researchers who create products in South Africa specifically for South Africans and South African skin concerns.

LAMELLE_LOGO

They have various ranges, and the one I have been testing is called Nourish. I tried to explain this, but once I read over it I had even confused myself, it involves free radicals and electrons and lots of science stuff, so before I confuse you I thought I will be better to share with you how their website describes The Nourish range:

“Did you know that free radicals are atoms or molecules that have one or more unpaired electrons making them ‘reactive’ with other atoms or molecules creating cellular injury? When the free radical molecule involves oxygen, we call it a REACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES (ROS). ROS is a free radical.

Free radical production can be attributed to the following:

•The production of energy from the food we eat is a source of free radicals.

•2-5% of the oxygen we breathe is converted to Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) free radicals. In other words even at rest, we are producing ROS.

•The more oxygen we consume, the greater the amount of ROS we produce. This is especially true in athletes or people with a more active lifestyle.

The body has several antioxidants to combat these Reactive Oxygen Species. An anti-oxidant is a vital molecule that has the ability to deactivate ROS.

Lamelle Research Laboratories offers the most comprehensive free radical protection system against free radical damage.

The Nourish range offers the following benefits:

•Significant reduction in free radical injury,

•Reduction of premature photoageing,

•Preservation of the skin immune response

•Restoration of the natural skin antioxidant defence systems.”

I have been sent the Multi Active Sun 30 from lamelle’s Nourish range which is a sun cream.

PROS

First impressions of the product is that the packaging is minimalist. The colour of the cream is a light beige, not white like lots of sun creams, I assume this helps not making the product have that striking white suncream effect which a lot of other products do. The concentration of sun cream initially is thick but this absorbs into the skin in little-to-no time at all. Once the product is absorbed into the skin there is no glossy appearance to the skin. There is a slight “sun cream scent” but it is not overpowering and once worn for a few minutes seems to disappear completely. The concentrations of the product contains Pycnogenol which is significantly proven to reduce free radical formation, just like the other products in the Nourish range.

CONS

Multi Active Sun 30 is not waterproof, and as such needs to be reapplied to the skin after sweating and/or exposure to water. You need to use quite a lot of product in one go, I assume this can be reduced however this would then reduce the amount of skin protection you receive making the product redundant.

The price is slightly off-putting at first – R351.00 for 70ml. It is not a lot of product but the consistency of the product and the results it gives really makes it worth the price in my eyes.

It is advised that if you get sunburnt that the Multi-Active Sun 30 will work hand in hand with the Nourish Rescue Repair Gel if burning occurs to the skin.

Would I purchase this product again? Yes.

Would I reccommend this product? Yes – especially to people worried about free radicals or cellular injury.

Rating? As far as sun products go, one can only do so much before exhausting the true purpose and meaning of sun protection and therefore I give this product a 8/10 ( a real pity about the non-waterproof).

Check out Lamelle’s website, Facebook and Twitter @LamelleSA and let them know we sent you.
