Not All Sun Protection is Created Equal

Walking down any isle in any pharmacy or supermarket that contains millions of different brightly coloured bottles which all carry a fairly hefty price tag can be somewhat of a daunting prospect. They all claim that they are the best and will stop the harmful suns rays from burning your skin or worse, your precious children’s skin and at the end of the day – which claims can you trust? They all serve the purpose of sun protection but what do you need to look for when choosing which sun cream will be right for you and/or your families needs?

The question you need to ask yourself is simple…. do you want a product which works for an hour or so and needs to be reapplied. So in other words, there is no falling asleep on the beach or extensive periods of swimming while enjoying your summer holiday and constantly needs to be interrupted by reapply sunscreen or do you want a product that you apply once and carry on doing your thing without having to excessively worry whether or not that you are getting burnt to a crisp? I know which one I prefer. SOLRX

Last year, I was introduced to Solrx, a product that to me stood out miles beyond the rest. Every single sunscreen in the range proudly doesn’t contain any of the following products:

What’s NOT in Solrx Sunscreen products
Don’t You Want the Best for yourself?

  • All of our sunscreens are Titanium Free which, in some instances, have been known to be absorbed into the body through the skin.

  • Free of Nano-Particles which have been known to enter the body through your skin. (Nano-Particles are 1 billionth of something)

  • No Petrolatums or Mineral Oils. These have been known to dry out your skin.

  • 100% PABA & PARABEN FREE & have NO PABA DERIVATIVES.

  • Oil Free, Water or Aloe Based, Non-Greasy Light Lotions that go on Clear.

  • Unscented and Non-Irritating to the skin. (Tested by AMA Laboratories, NY)

  • NO Animal Testing

  • Make-up can go over our products and Does Not sweat into eyes.

This is a huge bonus, but to me the complete selling point on the Solrx range is that once applied to the skin it is guaranteed to continue protecting the skin for 8 hours after before the need to reapply. Even if 8 hours is spent in the water or excessive sweating has occurred. Water proof and Sweat Proof…. Sounds good right? Well, this is due to the specialised Solrx formulas that results in virtually NO-WASH OFF of the product and that the product maintains 97 – 100% strength for the 8 hour duration.

WaterBlock

The product I have been using (and loving) is the Extended Water Block SPF 44, 120ml sells for R225.00 or 60ml for R149.50. This sounds pricy, but you apply it once a day and wham bam you’re done – so its worth the investment as the product lasts for ages. Don’t settle. Also, other sunscreens are expensive too and you’ll use up to triple the amount in getting the full days protection.

My favourite’s packaging has had a face lift and will be available online only in 1 litre and 500ml.

The best news is that these products are all cruelty free and will really work in protecting your skin this summer or any season really. To view their full range, check it out here. Bonus, if you order online now and before 26 September 2014 you will get 10% off your order. Candle Revolution

Soy LitesAbout 6 months ago at an event I got given a different product to the normal what I usually recieve. This product was a candle, but to be specific, it was a Soy Lites candle. It has taken me so long to get round to using it because I must be honest I was a bit sceptical about using it. It was something out of the ordinary for me and what I normally do (which is rarely use any sort of body lotions apart from in the cold winter months) and with me going away soon on an overseas adventure to where it is definitely going to be the midst of summer and skin will be on show, I decided to take the plunge and actually try this revolutionary candle out.

Essentially, it is as simple as it sounds, a candle which is made from 100% soy oil and oure essential oils. The only thing is that the candle has skin moisturising benefits – you heard me right, a candle which moisturises your skin but it does not do this via osmosis in the air. Upon the candle burning the Soy Lites produce a pool of soft, warm, creamy oil, which while the candle is still burning you can pour from the glass container slowly into your hand and then apply all over your body slowly massaging it into your skin. It is not boiling hot as one would expect, it is just a perfect temperature. This oil is not overly greasy or waxy in texture, it is really smooth and is the ideal temperature for a massage or even to be used a daily moisturiser (which I believe might be too much fuss for me but I know some people love lavishing stuff onto themselves after bathing/showering).

Soy Lites are nauturally rich in Vitamin E and lecithin which is said to be of therpeutic benefit for those with cracked and dry skin or eczema or psoriasis.Soy Lites - How To

The Soy Lites candle which I have been using was the Harmony moisturing range which has essences of Rose, Geranium and Jasmine which smells absolutely divine but there is another 7 moisturising ranges using all different concoctions of different essential oils for everyone’s personal taste. I think the next one I will try will have to be the Decadence Moisturising range as it has my 2 favourite essential oils which are Vanilla and Ylang Ylang.

The candles retail on the Soy Lites website for R145.00 each and I have recently seem them for sale in Stuttafords and various pop up kiosks in shopping malls and I believe are a unique present and a gorgeous idea for bridal shower gift as it has a touch of hidden sexy without being over the top.

Optiphi’s Answer to Dehydrated Winter Skin

Curve Body LotionI received this beautiful crisp white and mint bottle of body lotion from Optiphi and my initial reaction was – oh goodness – I am not a body lotion fan BUT I am an Optiphi fan. So with all that faith I have stored in this wonderful brand I thought let’s give them a try…

Unlike most body lotions which have made me detest them because you apply them on your skin which absorbs the moisture and then the sensation disappears and you’re left feeling a bit greasy or you feel like you have a layer of cream on your skin that just makes you feel sticky. Curve Body Lotion is designed to rather gradually moisturise the skin for the whole day. Just like instead of waking up in the morning and drinking 2 litres of water, we drink a glass or two every few hours, this is the same solution for your skin – Curve allows your skin to sip moisture rather than down it in one go.

Dry, dull and sensitive winter skin from the cold weather conditions are banished and it acts a moisture retainer and reservoir while maintaining a healthy skin barrier against environmental stresses. The lotion is fast absorbing meaning you get out of the shower/bath get dry and apply some lotion by the time you have done one arm and/or leg the other has absorbed the moisture and is already starting to assist your skin in slowly absorbing the moisture rather than over doing it and leaving an excess residue which eventually just wipes off on whatever you wear or touch. It also leaves you smelling clean and expensive. Yes, you read that right, expensive has a smell. Its a smell of luxury that you get from products which have good ingredients.

This product retails for R360 for 250ml from selected Optiphi stockists which is a costly expense compared to most body lotions available, but I believe a complete necessity for skin that suffers from the winter blues.

OPI Feet – Double Coverage Review

Disclaimer : This is not a sponsored review, nor am I affiliated with the following brand/company in anyway.

OPI Feet Double Coverage is a moisturiser formulated specially for feet. This deeply hydrating foot lotion which drenches dry skin with a moisture thanks to a luscious formula enriched with nourishing Shea Butter, Antioxidants and smoothing silicones. This product protects feet from irritation with micronized cotton powder and combats unpleasant odours.

OPI DOUBLE COVERAGE

I don’t know about you, but when I’ve spent long hours on my feet applying makeup to clients faces, especially during the summer when I live in my flip flops my heels take an absolute beating. Dry cracked heels and I over makeup-crazy season are no strangers, and I was at my wits end with my feet being sore.

I bought this cream over December, and it is almost finished now (6 months later) and I was promised it would sort out my heels in no time as long as I applied to my feet every day. I asked the sales lady at Yemaya Spa if she was sure, as I am not a person for creams, especially on my feet and she told me – JUST DO IT – and you will see a difference! I apply the cream once I’ve showered or bathed and let it absorb in my skin for a few minutes before walking around/putting on shoes or socks.

Anyway, true to her word, I did see a difference, almost immediately.

Now, applying foot cream is not something that I would want to do everyday, maybe at most once every second day, but you instantly feel the benefits of this cream and it is absorbed into your skin very quickly. During the cold winter months I’ve started applying this every second to third day as living in thick fluffy socks my feet have remained smooth and hydrated thanks to Double Coverage.

20130604_170714

It leaves your feet feeling soft, smooth and refreshed.

Although this is a little pricey, it lasts forever and I will not be able to go back to any drug store brands or cheap supermarket peppermint foot creams as they simply won’t compare.

I paid R225 for this, and I would gladly do so again.
