Pain Free Laser – It’s A REAL Thing

Can we have a moment of silence for unwanted body hair, it’s really the pitspun kind of intended! Laser Hair Removal 1

Anyway, being an expert of all forms of hair removal with the exception of  shaving, I really was sceptical about the “pain free” part. Side note, I stay as far away from razors as possible because I am convinced that when I use one I will hit a main artery and die. Irrational fear, maybe but I’m not going to try it anytime soon. pulse

After my great facial with LED Light therapy experience at Pulse I decided that Amy knows a bit more about skin care and hair removal than the average skin hair removal guru I’ve come across and decided I don’t really have anything to lose in giving it ago. Just a little bit of history about 2 years ago I went for IPL laser which was great and it definitely thinned out my hair growth but it hurt like what I imagine it feels like to be burnt but under your skin. I only continued with the treatments because I had paid for them upfront and no one in their right minds could possibly find an IPL full bikini treatment as a luxury treatment. The thought of it still makes me shudder and its been about 2 years since my last treatment. Anyway, I digress, so the “Pain Free Laser Hair Removal”, sounded to me like a lot of advertising talk. I have never been so wrong… It’s like a walk in the park.

The most unpleasant part of the treatment is the dry-shave beforehand and the cold gel that is applied to the area being treated. Amy glides that machines over your hairy areas like a pro. It has a slightly warm sensation and occasionally reminded me of a high frequency skin treatment which I’ve had following an odd facial here and there over the years.

Following the treatment my skin was only slightly agitated and that was due to the fact that it had been dry shaved prior to the laser treatment. Next time I go I have been instructed to carefully shave (not hit any arteries and die) to make the Pain Free Laser session shorter and far more effective.

This will be me before my next pain free laser session... pssh first date.

This will be me before my next pain free laser session… pssh first date.

I’ve signed myself up for 6 sessions. So far its only been 10 days since my first treatment and I haven’t noticed an immediate loss of hair but I believe this is going to be my final leap to being completely hair free. Completely and utterly useless fact, I think because I finally did something about my hair growth is the reason why the weather has gone seriously cold and I apologise to everyone about that. It’s just Murphy doing his thing again.

LED Light Therapy at Pulse Dermatology

I recently had a first time experience in my personal skin care regime. I finally got my butt to Pulse Dermatology & Laser clinic in Durbanville. I had intitally been booked in for a lunchtime lift but after a very pain-free consultation with the wonderful Amy Bowie we decided that I did not need a lunch time lift as this is not a concern of mine (while age is still on my side) and we changed my treatment to a Mesoestetic peel customised for my oily and blackhead prone skin followed by some LED light therapy to make sure I was able to attend a very important business meeting afterwards – bare faced. pulse

Well, let me tell you this was certainly an experience and I did attend my meeting and I did score a new client so I must of looked half decent, sans makeup post peel. I think that is safe to say that its functional skincare and easily enough to attain even for the busiest of the busy.

The Mesoestetic peel was so gentle I hardly felt a tickle and ever since my skin has been radiant, following this is when I had my LED Light Therapy to reduce redness and speed up the healing process of the skin post peel. I had a slight bit of redness on my nose afterwards but the rest of my face was as it is normally.

Let’s start off with what exactly is LED Light Therapy?

  • LED stands for: Light-emitting diode
  • Also known as: photodynamic therapy or PDT
  • It is used for a variety of skin treatments including but not limited to acne, skin healing and anti-ageing
  • The technology has been around and in use in salons for about 30 years
  • It is completely non-invasive
  • It is pain free
  • Its quite relaxing actually

After my peel was completed, I lay on the therapy bed and had my eyes covered with goggles and the lights were brought over my face. When the machine was switched on it seemed incredibly bright – but it is something that I easily got used to. the light cannot damage your eyes at all. If you have a tendency to feel claustrophobic then it might trigger this but I was really 100% fine and you can even move the lights yourself if you are battling with it.

The LED light therapy results in increased cellular activity this results in soothing and calming on the skin. It was incredibly calming to my normally quite red skin after a peel and this is because the light stimulates skin renewal and promotes collagen, elastin production and oxygenation for up 180 days after the treatment. It further treats the skin on an anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial level.

Would I do it again? Most definitely! After my session at pulse, including my peel my skin feels brand new! Unfortunately I completely blanked out and forgot to take photos, but next time I sure will.

There are additional skin concerns that you can treat with the LED light therapy at Pulse, as their website elaborates:

  • Purifying, antibacterial

  • Blemished and oily skin, recent acne scars

  • Redness and flushing

  • Brown spots

  • Skin texture and firmness

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Large pores

  • Dark under eye circles

  • Restores youth to mature skin

  • Cellular rejuvenation, collagen and ATP production

  • Anti-inflammatory, Calms red capillaries & Rosacea

  • Calms skin inflamed by blemishes

  • Intercellular communication, reduces swelling, calms irritation

  • Calming and soothing

  • Alleviates acne and oily skin

  • Pigmentation

  • Increases cellular activity

  • Lymphatic system, muscle toning, anti-aging

If you have any queries on what treatment would be best to suit your skin concern, I’d suggest making an appointment to meet with Amy at Pulse on 021 914 0447 and she will be able to help you achieve your skin goals and possibly make your skin dreams come true. Thanks for helping with mine Pulse!

Pulse Dermatology & Laser

866199298220a853b4e51128562ab9fdRecently launched in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town is a brand new and fresh take on Dermatology & Laser, called PULSE, headed up by beautiful and passionate Amy Bowie who has 6 years experience in the UK and has  worked alongside with some of the industry best dermatologists and plastic surgeons, she has the passion and drive in order to bring South Africans up-to-speed on the international offerings of non-surgerical treatments with her passion for advanced aestheitc procedures.

Customers on the South African shores are rather discreet when it comes to plastic surgery, unlike our overseas counterparts who have hopped onto the plastic surgery bandwagon, we tend to opt for more discreet non-invasive, minimal downtime (if any) solutions. Treatments such as the Vampire Facial, Dermaroller – micro needling, diamond dermabrasion and not to mention Laser which is the answer to many problems such as hair removal, skin pigmentation, skin tightening and non-invasive laser liposuction, all of which have a huge popularity and demand locally. Pulse have acknowledged this, offered all of these treatments and more for the best and most effective non-invasive treatments available. Local trends, suggest that laser lipo is amongst one of the most sought after treatments and Amy says,

Laser Lipo seems to be huge here in Cape Town, however I find that in most cases patients are getting more water loss with this treatment than anything else, which has resulted in us bringing in London’s star body tightening laser, The Near Infra Red in motion laser from Alma lasers -NIR. This not only speeds up the localised metabolism of the area treated, but it instantly tightens the skin. The results have been fantastic! And because it is working deep in the skin and fatty tissue, the results last! It gives the effect of a bottom lift and is great for saddle bags, muffin tops, excess weight around the abdomen and even those bingo wings.”

With all the hype surrounding laser, Amy advises that without knowing your onions about how the process of laser works it could potentially be a risk to you,

Laser is basically a method of creating a controlled wound to resurface skin damage or target hair. The area treated needs to be taken care of according to what was done. Also certain medications make one light sensitive so one needs to assess whether the laser is appropriate to use. If patients are on medications that thin the skin: ie Roaccutane, then laser is a big no no.

With being an educated customer, before having any laser treatments Amy suggests that some of the most important questions to ask the laser technician is how much experience they have; what their success rates are; whether it is IPL or laser and what care is needed after the area is treated and for how long. Pulse is unique as each consultation is promised to address your personal needs and concerns rather than a generic treatment provided to anyone that walks through the door. The treatments provided are a solution to your needs and concerns which are customised for you, within your budget to avoid breaking the bank.

In terms of equipment, Pulse makes use of the UK Gold aesthetics award winning Soprano XLI Pain free Laser Hair Removal and Soprano XLI Pain Free Skin Tightening machines which are pain free as the names suggest and are safe to use on all skin colours. Amy tells us that before considering any laser treatment be sure that SPF is the staple of your daily skin care routine and if you have sensitive skin take an anti-histamine an hour before your laser treatment in case of “heat rash” from the laser. The other treatments on the menu at Pulse also make use of internationally acclaimed machinery like the Nuskin 500 from London for Microdermabrasion. The biggest trend in terms of aesthetics and laser which Amy believes is going to be a big hit with the South African market is combining these therapies together, like making use of lasers and LED therapy in one session in order to have better results with little down time following treatments. Combining the treatments requires a lot of knowledge and skill from the aesthetician and with Amy’s past experience abroad she is confident in performing these therapies together at Pulse.

Pulse Dermatology & Laser’s full treatment offering extends from pain free laser hair removal, general skin health, psoriasis treatment, acne control, scar reduction, rosacea treatment, cellulite reduction, and the revolutionised fat reduction laser and even more but for a full list please visit their website, their Facebook and their Twitter @PulseDerm.
