Selfies On A Stick

If you have been to a tourist attraction lately then you would of been exposed to the new age phenomenon of extreme selfie-takers. The ones that decide that an arms length is not enough and asking someone else to take a photo hinders the appearance of the photograph so they strap their phone onto a monopod (adapted from a tripod missing 2 legs – normally used to steady a camera) with a remote trigger. Le Boyfriend and I first stumbled across the now infamously named “selfie stick” while we were on holiday in Italy at the Coliseum in August. We laughed at the concept and people using them. Then we met up with the wedding party in Tuscany and we had the experience of using a friends Go Pro, with selfie stick included which resulted in some awesome group shots in a location where English is hardly spoken. Now the concept is laughing at us and we own our very own selfie stick…

Have we used it? Only as I took it out the box and immediately shared the pathetically candid shot on Instagram – but I am taking it with me on our upcoming travels and possible videos that need filming since my SLR does not support videos anymore – this is all a pipeline plan. It is a bit of an eye sore. You can appear to be a bit of a twit in public, so make sure to use your selfie stick wisely and not irresponsibly like this Buzz Feed article.

How does it work? For my phone which is an Android based phone you pair the phone to the selfie stick via Bluetooth, connect your phone into the cradle and push a button at the end of the stick. Quite idiot proof and easy. The selfie stick takes one hour to charge via USB cable and I am not sure how long the battery life lasts but I would imagine you could get a good couple of shots with it.

My friend Alice from Lipgloss Is My Drug brought her selfie stick to the G Star Raw ladies event last week and here we are pictured, believing in our selfies – if you will with Jamal from Woman Online Magazine.

You see, if you can’t beat them – then join them. Locally in South Africa you can shop for your selfie stick online at Selfie-Sticks.co.za for R399 for one or R700 for 2 in a variety of colours. Be sure to check out their Facebook page and hit the like button. Awesome quick and efficient service and I would recommend them to anyone looking for their very own selfie stick. Selfie-Stick Christmas Special

P.S. Perfect Christmas gift for a teenager (if you can deal with the influx of selfies).

Disney Princesses On Instagram

Whenever I come across these, they make me laugh because not only are these characters our pop culture idols of the past – what they say rings true to exactly how I imagine they would #hashtag and share things with their followers, being us. Plus, they are 99% better than most of the celebrities out there!

The poster child for PETA, I'm sure she'd get a follow from them for this and I bet she'd rather go naked than wear fur too!

Do You Even Selfie?

Selfies are the internets bastard child but love them or hate them, they are here to stay. With selfie being reportedly incorporated into the dictionary and creating a stir with the pro-selfie lovers and the selfie-haters about it  was the focus of debate which has still not ended and has gone as far as being described as word of the year. Simply put, a selfie is the act of taking a self portrait, generally using a camera phone and holding the camera in weird angles in order to get the shot. Awesome Selfie 01Awesome Selfie 02

From a photography background, I truly don’t believe its a form of art or expression if it is using a smart phone and a filter but then again I am not the world’s biggest fans of selfies but I don’t hate them either – I’m all for anything in moderation. Old school self portraits using intricate lighting techniques and self timers can be passed off in my opinion more as art, expression as they still echo a certain je nes sais qua which an iPhone just can’t bring to the table. Too many iPhone selfies write the word NARCISSIT all over your face when I’m scrolling through my newsfeeds and your face in 100 different angles and expressions really grates my tits! However, with that being said, I have to take my hat off to the creativity of this unknown girl who has put a lot of effort into creating the most unique mirror-smartphone- selfies I’ve come across in a while. See more below… Continue reading
