Guest Contribution : First Impressions Wild Fern Manuka Honey Range

Fi sent me three samples of the Wild Fern Manuka honey products to try out.

The three products were:

-Ultra Rich Night Revival Crème

-Gentle Facial Cleanser

-Conditioning hand Crème

 

All of these products are manufactured in New Zealand by Parrs products. The key ingredient in these products are Active AAH 650+ New Zealand Manuka Honey.

Manuka is a flowering tree native to New Zealand. The honey collected from these flowers is what makes these products different to so many other products on the market.

Manuka honey contains an enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide, which we all know is an antiseptic. Except for the high antiseptivc and bacterial contents, Manuka honey is also packed with proteins, vitamins and minerals.

AAH stands for Active Antibacterial Antioxidant. The number 650+ is the activity range of the antiseptic value. Ok, so this basically means the Manuka honey is categorised on a scale of numbers from 470-650, and the higher the number, the higher the antibacterial value of the product.

 

This is how I experienced the products:

 

Gentle Facial CleanserGentle Facial Cleanser

It is a yellow, milky substance that smells like honey. When I squeezed it into my hand it was quite runny and my initial thoughts were oh no, how is this going to clean my face? When I applied it to my face I actually had to eat a huge chunk of my own humble pie, because even though the product is runny, it is extremely moisturising and I simply cannot describe how silky and soft this is on my skin. I was blown away.

It cleansed my face properly, removed all my makeup and left my skin feeling so soft.

Of all three products, this one is by far the superstar.

 

Ultra Rich night revival crème

This cream has a thick, yellow substance and the smell is sweet but more humbling.

My skin definitely felt more moisturised after use and I woke up with a dewy complexion.

 

Conditioning hand crème

Conditioning Hand Creme

This cream also is a thick, yellow substance that has the sweet honey smell. Even though it is a thick cream, did it not leave my hands greasy. It absorbed immediately and left my hands hydrated and looking good.

 

Overall I think these are great products and I would definitely purchase them for my daily skincare routine.

One look at the supermarket shelves reveals the huge growth in alternatives to anything and everything, including milk. The secret is to let your diet lead you to an oasis of calm and health. When you are stressed out chances are your diet takes a plunge for the worse, You may eat the whole shebang, or lose your appetite altogether. No matter how you deal with it, stress affects your body in more ways than one and by eating incorrectly you could be doing yourself harm. Choose wisely what you put in your mouth and you can help your body with the war on stress.

Place antioxidant-rich foods on your grocery list – these include tomatoes, apricots, almonds, hazelnuts, mangoes, peppers, pilchards, mussels, broccoli, carrots, paw-paw and spinach.

The benefits of milk:

Milk contains the amino acid tryptophan, which is converted into vitamin B3 by the liver. It then helps raise serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that helps the body regulate appetite, sleep patterns and mood. Because of this ability, tryptophan has been used in the treatment of a variety of conditions, most notably insomnia, depression and anxiety.

Eating smart:

Oat-enriched smoothie

If you simply cannot face a big breakfast, it might be a great idea to bulk up on your smoothie with a handful of oats.

Ingredients:

One serving:

1 banana

1 teaspoon of honey

90 ml full cream milk

125 ml plain yoghurt

½ cup raspberries

1 ½ cup rolled oats

Method:

Add all the ingredients to a blender and process until smooth. Serve immediately.

A common reason for striking cows’ milk and dairy products off the menu is having a low level of the enzyme lactase needed to digest the milk sugar, lactose. Lactose intolerance is quite common affecting at least 33% of people worldwide. Moderating your milk consumption can prove to be beneficial.

Although some experts blame cows’ milk for the increased risk of health problems, others argue that its complex mixture of nutrients has health benefits:

  • Milk is rich in calcium which is required for strong bones and teeth, and for a healthy functioning heart. A 250 ml glass of 2% low-fat cows’ milk offers 24% of the adult nutrient reference value of calcium (1300 mg a day).
  • Milk contains good fats too – Milk from grass-fed cows contain “good “unsaturated fats. Replacing the “bad” fats with the “good” fats in a diet will reduce heart-disease risk. Milk also has conjugated linoleic acid, which assists in reducing cholesterol.
  • Vitamins and minerals – Milk is full of vitamins, minerals and other biologically active health-boosting compounds.
  • Probiotics – fermented milk products that have live cultures, such as yoghurt, contain probiotics – these are linked to a range of health benefits such as an increased immune function. Try adding low-fat yoghurt to your bowl of muesli in the mornings.
  • Weight control – Full cream milk passes through the gastric tract slowly, which can help to regulate blood sugar levels and appetite.

Remember that living a beautifully healthy life is what really matters at the end of the day.

Snack It!!!!!

Heya Poutlings!!

I trust the first month of 2013 is treating you well, if not…. well the future is in your hands so make it work for you!

As for the common persons new years resolutions, if you had any I hope you’ve stuck to them and if being more healthy and fit was one of them, I have a few healthy snacks to help you get through the day.

Eating healthy shouldnt need to be a chore, these snacks can be made in just 5min.

RICE CAKE STACK

– Spread a tablespoon of natural peanut butter on a rice cake, then add some sliced or mashed banana on top of that before adding the second rice cake on top.

– This is ideal as it is a high-energy snack that is packed full of potassium, fibre and healthy fats. Peanuts are also full of essential nutrients, such as protein, vitamin E, folic acid, niacin, B6, folate and thiamin.

– The fibre in bananas not only keeps digestion regular, but also helps maintain low blood sugar and curbs overeating.

NUKED SWEET POTATO

– Prick the skin of a medium-sized sweet potato (300 grm) with a fork in a few places. Place it on a plate and microwave at full power for about five minutes. Once cooked through cut the sweet potato open and sprinkle it with cinnamon and a sprinkle of brown sugar, honey or a sweetener.

– Sweet potato contain beta-carotene, a phytochemical used to make vitamin A, as well as loads of vitamin C to boost your immune system.

– Sweet potatoes are high in Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 helps reduce the chemical homocysteine in our bodies. Homocysteine has been linked with degenerative diseases, including the prevention of heart attacks.

CARROT, CREAM CHEESE & RAISIN BITES

– Spread some fat-free cream cheese onto a whole-wheat tortilla. Add some grated carrot and raisins before rolling it up and slicing into 10 ubite-size pieces.

– The sweetness of the carrots and raisins make it taste like a treat, without the guilt. Carrots are also rich in betacarotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the liver, while raisins are a good source of fibre, calcium and healthy sugar energy.

– The potassium and magnesium contents of raisins help reduce acidity (an abnormal metabolic condition known as acidosis) and remove toxins from the body, which may cause diseases such as arthritis, gout, kidney stones and heart disease.

BILTONG WRAP

– Fill half of a whole-wheat tortilla with lean slices of biltong, sliced tomato, lettuce and a small wedge of avacodo. As all the ingredients are served cold so you can prepare and eat this snack in under 5 minutes.

– The meal provides the ideal mix of fibre, protein, and heart-healthy fat.

– Biltong is a high protein and low-fat snack. Because biltong has been dried and cured, it is light to carry yet contains a power pack of valuable nutrition, making it ideal to take everywhere.

So Poutlings, instead of that dreadful chocolate, or a packet of chips, try these delicious snacks.

Winter Blues

Heya Poutlings!

Winter hasn’t even started and I’ve already got flu!!!!
I HATE having flu with a passion, nothing worse than feeling horrible due to some flu bug!
So I did a little research on the top tips to prevent the horrible flu bugs from attacking our amazing pouters!
The flu is a virus that is transmitted through contact with someone who is infected, by droplets through a cough or a sneeze, or through contaminated items, such as pens or any other daily items.
Preventing the flu!!!

1. Take your vitamins
Firstly I’m not one for taking multi-vitamins, personally they don’t work for me. However taking vitamins in different forms is essential to fighting the flu and also for staying healthy all year round. My best bet would be the vitamin B12 shot, and vitamin C and vitamin D.
2. Eat flu-fighting, anti-oxidant rich foods

An overall healthy diet will boost your immune system, but the following foods are rich in anti-oxidants and are essential in fighting against various viral infections. The presence of antioxidants in your body will ensure you stay healthy, longer.

– Spinach – High in iron and antioxidants
Spinach is low in saturated fat, and very low in cholesterol. It is also a good source of Niacin and Zinc, and a very good source of Dietary Fibre, Protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Vitamin K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Manganese.

– Broccoli – High in Vitamins A and C
Broccoli is low in saturated fat, and very low in cholesterol. It is also a good source of Protein, Thiamin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iron and Selenium, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Manganese.

– Garlic – High in minerals such as copper, iron, zinc, calcium and selenium
Garlic stimulates the multiplication of infection-fighting white blood cells and also contains the phyto-chemical allicin, which has anti-bacterial properties.
Garlic is very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. It is also a good source of Calcium, Phosphorus and Selenium, and a very good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and Manganese.

– Blueberries – Packed with Vitamins C and E, and disease-fighting antioxidants
Blueberries are a good source of vitamins and minerals, such as potassium, iron, and vitamin C. Blueberries are also strong sources of dietary fibre. Each half cup serving of blueberries provides a full two grams of dietary fibre which is as much as in one slice of whole wheat bread.
Blueberries are among the richest sources of antioxidants and other important nutrients. Blueberries are also delicious, versatile, high in fibre, and low in calories.
The health benefits associated with blueberries include improved eyesight, stronger blood vessels, reduced risk of heart disease, reduced risk of urinary tract infections, better memory performance, and promoting and maintaining

– Oats – High in soluble fibre, which absorbs cholesterol and helps establish a healthy environment in your digestive tract.

– Water – Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to stay well hydrated. Water keeps the mucous membranes in your upper respiratory tract moist and resistant to infection.

– Cold-water fish – The omega-3 fats in cold-water fish, such as salmon and tuna, create high blood levels of flu-fighting T cells and interferon.

– Pumpkin – High in Carotenoids, Vitamin A and B-Group Vitamins
Pumpkins are a good source of Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Pantothenic Acid, Iron, Magnesium and Phosphorus, and a very good source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Riboflavin, Potassium, Copper and Manganese.
Pumpkins are high in beta carotene, vitamin A and other carotenoids that are powerful antioxidants. Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of healthy polyunsaturated oils.

Garlic stimulates the multiplication of infection-fighting white blood cells and also contains the phyto-chemical allicin, which has anti-bacterial properties.

3. Sleep more, stress less
Sleep rejuvenates and revitalises your body, and helps your immune system function at its best. 
Deep sleep stimulates the thymus gland to produce T-cells, which are a type of white blood cell that helps reject foreign substances, and controls the production of antibodies to fight infection. 
Sleep also helps your body deal with stress, which has a strong influence on your immune system. Stress triggers the release of adrenaline and cortisol—hormones that reduce your body’s ability to produce antibodies. 
That’s why people who are highly stressed get more colds, suffer more digestive tract problems and are more frequent bouts of fatigue. Aim to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night, and practice relaxation techniques to help prevent stress.

4. Wash your hands frequently
With good old-fashioned soap and water (60 seconds).  Antibacterial soap, contrary to public belief, does not to a better job and in fact could be aiding more resistant strains of bacteria.

Product Review ~ AHAVA Purifying Mud Mask

Hello Pretty poutlings!

Hope you are all having a fantastic day. Today I would like to tell you about AHAVA Purifying Mud Mask which I received in my November Rubybox.

AHAVA Purifying Mud Mask 

This product sells for R350 for 50ml

Yes, it’s true, most ladies freak out if they think of putting mud on their faces, but this one was such a treat! I made sure that I had enough in my sample pouch for 2 treatments for me.

Detoxifying Dead sea mud with kaolin (a soft white china clay) together with energising minerals and moisturising elements cleanse and clears all excess oil without stripping the skin.

Applied after a good wash and exfoliation with my EA 3-in-1 I left it on for 2 minutes as directed and then rinsed off.

I do have to say my skin felt absolutely wonderful after this treatment, soft and supple and moisturised.

So, if you’re looking for a mask to treat yourself with every now and then, this is it ladies!
